  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

jj has said: no other frame rates than up to 30fps.. heat management system yadda yadda

but full anamorphic lens coverage?.. only epic.. why?.. if monstro is at scarlet.. why only epic?

dont know....but maybe the 20000 usd difference has something to do with it.

There is absolutely no reason why you couldn't shoot with anamorphic lenses and crop the not covered/unused areas in post. People have been doing it on the Red One and cropping the sides in post for several months. The workflow would not be any different on a Scarlet. It will just be better on scarlet because you'll get the full FOV of the lenses. It was only yesterday that Red released Build 18 with a desqueeze in the viewfinders and in Red Alert. I think that for $23,000 less, that is a fair trade off.

I asked this question a day or so ago on another thread - no response AFAIK.
The only way you couldn't shoot anamorphic is if the Brain detects what kind of mount is on there via electronics, and cripples the sensor crop accordingly.

Maybe Jim is just saying that anamorphic de-squeeze monitoring won't be offered.

To not offer the anamorphic frame (which is just an academy 35 gate) seems very weird, as it would be crippling the camera for no technical reason.

Not that I have any kind of inside knowledge or anything, but I don't think that there is any intention to cripple the camera. From what I've gathered there just won't be as much electronics or processing power so there won't be enough space on the chip to add all of the extra features and framerates and frame sizes that Epic or the Red One have. Similar issues have come up on the Red One, where there wasn't enough space on the FPGA for all of the features that people were requesting.

I know that people want to get everything that they can for as little money as possible, but in my opinion, this is a pretty fairly tiered camera system. The more it costs, the more features it has. Not just because, but because it costs Red more to add those features. And the most expensive model that has features that people wouldn't have dreamed about last month even, is still a fraction of what other companies are charging for their professional cameras.

I personally wouldn't worry to much about the anamorphic issue. I can't imagine that there won't be ways around the limitations. And it's a 6K, FF35, interchangeable mount motion picture camera that weighs 3lbs and costs $12,000! Are they kidding!!?? I'm really not trying to be asshole by saying this. I just can't believe that more people aren't totally shocked and impressed with these specs and price points, because I am.

The gate neeed (24x18mm, right) is actually a lot smaller than the sensor area of FF35 Scarlet, so recording ana footage should be no problem, noone's going to stop you from just cropping and squeezing it in post.

The limited internal processing capabilities of Scarlet brains in general might, however, make it impossible to perform a "squeeze" operation like RED One does for outputting ana signals corrected on set - which may be why it's not planned as a feature (yet).

Perhaps for monitoring with the right monitor?

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to do this? You already have 6K worth of resolution on a huge freakin' sensor. Just wondering why you would want to go anamorphic?

why?.. as simple as shooting anamorphic.. didn't you ever do it?.. if not.. take some examples of movies shot in anamorphic.. you'll check out the differences among certain variables such as flares for example.. resolution is not the mantra.. using my anamorphic set can result in a such look i want to go after.. more questions?

i have never shot anamorphic, but many of the films i love best were shot anamorphic.

i thought one of the main reasons to do it was increased "negative" or in this case sensor size, along with the DOF changes that come along with that. i realize there are some other things that happen to an anamorphic image, but it seems like a bit of a hassle when the FF35mm sensor is already giving you many of the benefits of anamorphic.

to each his own, though. if you think it will make the picture look better, then by all means, i look forward to seeing what you shoot.

better is subjective.. horses for courses..

example: i am shooting some piece using anamorphics.. for any reason i need an anamorphic outcome to be shot where an epic (for several reasons) is out of question.. i can't.

why?

because must red1 be protected??

or epic?

as red1 owner so to speak.. any protective measure is bullshit.. for real filmmakers.. not just real posters :)

That was the original reason. These days with the high resolution sensors we have, the only reason to do it on a digital cinema camera is for the aesthetic properties shooting anamorphic exhibits. I personally think it's extremely overrated, but then again having the choice to shoot this way or not makes everyone happy. :-)

Certainly you can put anamorphic lenses on the FF Scarlet just like you could on the FF Epic. The resulting image, however, will look distorted when you shoot. I think what RED is saying is that Epic will have the processing power to unsqueeze your camera for the viewfinder and display outputs in realtime, whereas Scarlet will not.
