Recently, I picked up the new Fujifilm, GFX 100 II. Needless to say, this camera is amazing for stills. But I also had the opportunity to shoot some video with it. I shot both in anamorphic and also in the Cine 5.8K capture mode. I really like this mode. It utilizes the full width of the sensor and gives a really unique perspective. As I write this, I’m playing with the footage, and honestly I like what I see. It’s not really noisy even though I shot this at night. The image doesn’t appear videoish… With one provision… you need to turn down the camera sharpening. All the way down. Provided you do this you get a really nice cinematic image out of this camera. Granted, I filmed to ProRes LT and utilized FLog2.

Has anyone here also been considering this cameras for video? I’d be curious to hear different opinions.

Side note:
Fujifilm does provide an Aces color transform file for this camera. It’s the first time they have offered this on one of their cameras. I’m a bit unclear of where these .ctl files should be copied to in DaVinci Resolve. I tried copying them to the Developer/DaVinciCTL/Aces Transforms/IDT/ folder. But they did not seem to be registered in Resolve… so I could not apply them to the clips. I also tried creating a “Aces Transforms” directory under the DaVinci Resolve folder… but that also didn’t work. If anyone knows I’d appreciate the input. I’m new to aces workflow.

I've got no reason to actually get one, but I've been impressed by some of the camera specs and sample images I've seen from the camera.

I'm left with the impression there could actually be a Fujifilm Digital Cinema Camera good enough to compete with the top three manufacturers, if the company behind the GFX 100 II wanted to make such a thing.

As it stands though, I think they've come up with a really good hybrid stills/video type camera, possibly the best I've seen so far.

The GFX100 II offers a very unique set of features. I know that there are some larger productions looking into this camera. I also would love to see Fujifilm offer a full fledged cinema camera with this massive sensor… I’m certain they are exploring this option.

Will you be checking out the external recording of BRAW by any chance? I'm curious, practicalities and workflow issues aside, what the absolute best quality video that can be captured with this camera actually is.

Why yes, I have a Blackmagic Video Assist 12G 7” and plan to shoot some footage with it to see what’s possible. Though honestly, the ProRes files are pretty flexible. With the exception of being able to adjust white balance and ISO, the ProRes files are probably enough 85% of the time.

After having another shoot over the weekend, I’m even more impressed with the camera. I will say this, if filming outside for extended periods in hot conditions, get the fan unit. While the camera did not shut down due to heat, I did see a warning. I was filming in the 5.8K cinema mode. I think it just flashes the warning, as I kept rolling and nothing happened. The temp mode was set to the high temp option. That said, I also own the fan, just in case. Overall, it’s an extremely solid performer. The battery also lasted longer than I expected.

I believe this camera might actually be special. Few are, so that’s saying something.

The mark 1 didn’t have a OLPF does the mark 2?

thanks

The GFX series is designed for high resolution/detail. As the OLPF would decrease detail, it is not included on these cameras. That said, the image is nonetheless outstanding.

I understand for the utility for photos, but in a world with 10k monstros, it's a hard sell for this on video.

*I understand all projects/work/approaches are different and one is a great and small photo camera in addition.
