Up for sale is a Zeiss Contax 28mm/2 "Hollywood" lens. If you already know about this lens there's nothing more to say. If you don't know, it's quite a legendary lens amongst the Zeiss Contax set. Consult with the various Contax fanatics on the internet by doing a simple Google search and you'll know what the hoopla is all about.

Optically the glass is absolutely PERFECT. Rear and front elements are flawless and there seems to be no dust inside of the lens groups. Mechanically the lens doesn't have quite the smooth focus operation, and there seems to be internal rattling of the lens group against the exterior housing. AEG version with early serial number 59XXXXX. If you want that Zeiss Superspeed coating look, this is your lens.

Cosmetically this lens has seen better days, but it's appearance does not judge it's mechanical and optical function. AEG lenses have a finish that can be easily worn through the years. I can confirm this lens performs excellent... only selling it because I wish to keep my entire Contax set MMJ or MMG... all of my AE lenses have to go.

Nothing in terms of cine-modding has been done to this lens. It comes with the stock C/Y mount (Works great with Fotodiox adapters).

SOLD

Amazing lens. A lot of them have that kind of cosmetic condition.

Here's the thing. These lenses are strange birds. For some reason, most of them have low serial numbers. I don't think I've ever seen them with high serials in the 7's or 8's. I just did a quick ebay search now and found two MM's, both with very early 6xx-xxx serials. And both made in West Germany.

It's almost like they made such small batches of these, that the AE & MM distinctions may not mean that much.

You may be better off KEEPING this one till you can truly find a very rare, later serial 28mm f2. It may be a while before you do.

The 28mm 2.8 is much easier to find in MM with higher serials, and though that lens has pretty good close focusing (but nothing like the f2), and has phenomenal resolution stopped down...it still doesn't have the crazy bokeh and personality of this guy.

Just my 2cents.

I'm sticking with my 28mm F2.8 MMJ in the mid 7XXXXXX serial range for now until I find a rare MMJ F2.0 (I've found them on eBay but they're going for a crazy amount). I just want to keep the set all consistent (Bokeh is huge difference) so hence it going up for sale.

Nick, I must say you've got a quick trigger finger and a knack for hunting and replying anything with Contax in it. Love the passion bud :) We need more people like you around here.

Haha, no problem. I can't help myself, really...

I feel the same way Nick. Even though I am good with my current MMJ/MMG set... I still find myself still glancing & googling around at least once a day in search of Contax gems

...that and screw-in split diopter filters!

Haha, no problem. I can't help myself, really...
