I think it has to do with the prevalence and availability of third party battery solutions which are more compact, not to mention cheaper in most cases I believe.

It also has to do with the fact that it took so long after cameras were delivered for it to be shipped that most owners were forced to buy some sort of brick type solution anyway so it became redundant.
