Steve - What HI footage have you shot?
Was Mavericks 50' Hawaiian?! Has to be 25'...
Hawaii Red footage: small Pipeline, Waimea valley scenics, Mokuleia agriculture fields
I shot every winter in Hawaii, all islands, from 1987 to 2002. Obviously that was before Red. Shooting in Hawaii is like 2nd nature to me. I look forward to visiting the Islands again soon.
The wave sets for Mavericks for the contest were 50' to 55' wave faces - and some possibly some even bigger (60'). I've shot professional surfing worldwide - all the "name" breaks, for about 27 years now, and its the largest paddle-in surfing I've ever shot. As you'd guess, I'm way familiar with "Hawaiian" size waves and measurement - IMO Mavericks that day was between 28' and 35' Hawaiian measurement.
As mentioned, last year's Billabong XXL prize for the largest paddle in wave ridden worldwide in the year went to a contestant in the Mavericks contest I shot with Red One - that should give independent verification to the size of the waves that day.
