Up for sale is one IB/E Optics Null lens and Null Target kit with Lowepro padded case. The Null lens is the PL mount model and is specifically designed with the RED One in mind. Can be used with or without the included Null target. Other Null lens models can be purchased to support different Lens mounts. Reticle image is a green Siemens Star set slightly off-center, which makes it easy to adjust your back-focus (Flange Focal Depth) to within 5 microns. This is a very convenient and accurate way of adjusting the back focus on your RED One.

Perfect like-new condition. Kit sells for $1699 from AbelCine. Buy it here for $1500.

Reason I'm selling? Had to buy the RED Focus and don't need this as well. The current PL mount Null lens is not compatible with the EPIC. However it still works great with other cameras, especially the RED One.

...

What makes the Red Null incompatible with Epic, Jeff?

The "throat" or sensor well gradually narrows on the EPIC as you move back toward the sensor. So the IB/E Null lens physically does not fit. If it would fit, then it would work great! But it doesn't... :-( That's the only reason I'm selling this kit. And I feel I should be up-front about that because a lot of people looking to buy may be hoping to use it with an upcoming EPIC camera. Probably will put it on eBay here shortly if no one is interested.

I'm open to offers and/or trades... Hit me up. I'm always looking for stuff.

Interesting - does that potentially also stop some lenses (PL, Canon, Nikon) physically working with the Epic that would work fine on a Red One I wonder? I hope not!

As Canon and Nikon stills lenses were designed to not hit the swinging mirror in an SLR, and most PL lenses were likewise designed for film cameras with rotating mirrors, I would expect the vast majority of existing lenses fit the EPIC just fine. The only way to know for sure is to test it, but I wouldn't get overly worried at this point.

I'm not worried about the rear element protruding too far into the body - but if the Red Null doesn't fit diameter-wise, some "fat" rear elements may also not fit?

It's a valid concern to some extent. Any PL or SLR lens that is designed to work with a film camera is going to be just fine. The EPIC has more clearance inside than any film camera with a mechanical shutter. Diameter is a bit of an issue as we approach the sensor, but then again, the only lenses that are going to encounter this are those which protrude into the "shutter zone". The Null is shaped really weird as it protrudes behind the mount and the rear element of the lens basically fits right up against the sensor.

The IB/E Null can work with other cameras, but it was actually made for the RED One. Originally they were calling it the "RED NULL", but I think RED's trademark forced them to change that when they released it. The only other lens I'm aware of that had a similar issue with the EPIC is the Optimo 16-42 DP zoom and it's no longer an issue, Angenieux has addressed the problem and all current shipping lenses fit the EPIC just fine. They can fix the older lenses too. I think it's a matter or replacing the mount or the portion that protrudes behind the mount with one that is slightly smaller in diameter or tapered in a slightly different way.

I decided that we should change the name from the RED Null to the NULL Lens because (A) it was not a product of RED's and (B) I wanted "Lens" in there. RED never threatened anything but we felt it prudent to make the change.

Several years ago I asked Jim if the sensor & OLPF depth for the EPIC was the same as the RED One as we didn't want to have products sold to RED One clients that they then would not be able to use on the EPIC. He assured me that the depth was the same and it is, but I guess I should have been more specific as to clearance questions with the OLPF's masking. We are currently working on an idea to make the NULL Lens fit with the EPIC and if we succeed we will certainly let everyone know. We don't want to leave anyone hanging and still very much believe in the product.

That's good to know, Mitch. If there can be an economical fix for this, hopefully a repair or modification as opposed to buying a new Null Lens, then I would hang onto this kit for sure!

I think a lot has changed since the original inception of EPIC. The first non-functional prototypes were different behind the mount than what is shipping today. Back at NAB '08, when EPIC was unveiled, it was more compact than the RED One, but not as compact or modular as what we have now. The 'brain" concept didn't exist in the beginning, or not in the same way it does now.

As we prgress I will let you know. An inexpensive mod is our goal.

Thanks, Mitch.

I'm going to hang onto the Null kit for a while and see what you guys come up with.

Mitch,

I'm not sure that the Null Lens will fit the PL mount of a Sony F3 either.

A relatively inexpensive fix from IBE Optics would be much appreciated. :thumbup1:

By the way ... Great to have you back on Reduser, Mitch.
