I need to sell the best mic I have heard so far, honestly. We got a Pearl MSH-10 mic for a few projects, which is a short shotgun ideal for int. or closer ext. shots, and it is perfect for many sound FX applications since it is a very short shotgun, plus it will do Mid/Side Stereo, or perform as a normal mono mic.

The FX we got in stereo mode one hot summer night in a field of tall weeds makes you feel like you are sitting in the middle of it with the headphones on, seemingly every bug is heard with each ear hearing something different in M/S mode. Before you go with a Sennheiser or Neumann, check this mic out. Swedish made by a legend in the biz.

Very, very nice condition. It was even checked out at Trew audio, fully cleaned and tested to make sure. $1900 new, will sell for $1350. I will include a light-duty fur for it and an xlr breakout cable.

Please email me as I rarely check forums.

As a sound guy, I just wanted to chime in and just say that this is a pretty special little mic. A lot of people haven't heard of Pearl but they make fantastic mics and are repped by Independent Audio here in the states, who represent a lot of non-mainstream high end products.

This is a hypercardioid mid with a figure 8 side, great for stereo work and falls back as an excellent hypercardioid mono mic. Perfect for interiors in mono mode, exterior ambiances, and close-in work. They are a slight bit noisier than Sennheiser MKH mics (which is a tough ruler to be measured by), but still have excellent self-noise measurements, probably as quiet if not quieter than most Schoeps mics / capsules.

If I had some spare cash, I'd jump on this. Certainly guaranteed to be unrecognizable on an equipment spec sheet, but its the results that count.

Thanks for the post Tom.

Ive noticed how their name isn't as well known but the quality is pretty amazing. I was shocked, which is rare, when I first heard the raw stereo file play from it of a field of insects at night in the Appalachian foothills. With eyes closed I quickly got lost in it's sound; it completely took me out of the windowless room I was in.

Would you mind posting some of the sample recordings you've done with the mic?

I cant post it on here since it is not an image but I can email you an AIFF. I have one I did from a test, though I'm not a sound pro myself.

Are you running this straight into a Red? Can you?

Would it sound ok going into a Zoom H4n?

Are you asking if am I using it with a red? I don't own a red camera and it wasn't used on one. The main project it was used on was shot on film.

I guess you can use it with one as long as you get the adapter for that toy-like xlr connection the reds have. It is just a professional XLR mic like all the rest of them are. What is unique about it is that it can, if you want it to, record mid/side stereo. Otherwise you can use it like a short shotgun. The cable it comes with is a 5 pin XLR that splits into two normal 3 pin XLR ends that plug into any camera that can use them. On a professional recorder, like any Sound Device unit, the cable plugs into channels one and two and you set the recorder to M/S stereo, or just record ch. 1 for normal use.

Since the Zoom has XLR with phantom power, it would work just fine.

Check this site out. The background audio was made using this mic, though it is a mix of about 6 tracks. (wind, trees, crickets, Appalachian Cicadas- or as we might call them "Dry Flies", etc.)

Keep in mind it was compressed to mp3 for the flash file. The teaser has some of its background sounds mixed in too.

Thanks. Hopefully it will screen in NY sometime soon. Right now its showing in Ca. at Cinequest and at the Va. film fest.
