I am an early REDONE owner - Serial Number 206 and have already paid deposit on my epic-x stage 2 upgrade. Since I use the camera primarily for my underwater housing development work and underwater shooting - it spends a lot of time just sitting on the shelf. Therefore I am considering selling 4 blocks of 5 weeks of rental on my Epic-X.

Basically, it would work like this: once I receive the Epic-X, I will get the use it for two weeks for my development work. There will only be 4 others for a total of twenty weeks and in order to spread it out in those initial couple of months we will have a "draft". The first person that buys will get 1st pick, second buyer 2nd, etc. (note: you aren't required to "draft" any weeks initially - see clarification after draft example.)

For example: (assuming that everyone wants at least some as soon as possible - but you can choose any week when your "draft pick" comes up)

Week 1 and 2 (me for U/W housing development)

week 3 - 1st purchaser
week 4 - 2nd purchaser
week 5 - 3rd purchaser
week 6 - 4th purchaser
week 7 me
week 8 - 1st purchaser
week 9 - 2nd purchaser
week 10 - 3rd purchaser
week 11 - 4th purchaser
week 12 me
etc.

We will probably do one or two rounds and then see if we need more. Presumably after that things will open up and we can be pretty flexible - I will do everything I can to be accommodating in allowing switching of dates, exchanges, etc. but I also want a system in place to resolve any conflicts and so everyone knows where they stand and it is fair.

Clarification:

Dates are completely flexible and multiple consecutive weeks are allowed subject to prior bookings by the other blockholders, the only reason for the "draft" concept is to sort out if there is an initial rush or overlapping dates in the beginning.

Basically, if for example the epic gets to me August 15, you aren't going to know right away when you might have need for it so won't "draft" any weeks initially - but can you call up in October and say "I'd like to book for November 15-22" - as long as it is open at that point then yes you have it for that week.

I will also send out updates to the blockholders whenever time is booked.

Package will include the Epic-X Stage 2 package; (1x S35 MYSTERIUM-X brain with PL mount, 1x 5" LCD, 1x REDMOTE, 1x Side CF Module, 1x Module Adaptor, 1x Base I/O Module, 1x Pro Battery Module, 2x REDVOLT standard batteries, and 1x travel charger. NOTE: Upgrades available for select monitoring options and modules. i.e 1x Base I/O Module can be upgraded to PRO I/O Module by paying price difference.) ... at least 64 gigs media; an AquaVideo design shoulder mount; Red brick battery cable adapter and RED AC power supply; shotgun and lav microphone; PL and Electronic Canon mount (when it is available) and a Canon EF midrange zoom, and several nice manual iris and focus Zeiss SLR lenses with Canon mount adapters. I also have good relations with rental houses that can supply PL lenses at attractive prices or you can get your own. (Note: if blockholders are willing to chip in an extra $225 apiece I will upgrade to the pro I/O module)

Requirements:
1) This will be limited to US based people.

2) You will be required to have insurance (I pay about $900 per year for full all risk coverage of a full package plus $25,000 in rental equipment coverage and can give you a referral if necessary.)

3) You will be responsible for shipping costs to you and return to us. You will be required to become a known shipper with Delta Airlines Cargo for using Delta Dash same day shipping (quite inexpensive - about $80 anywhere in the country for a RED package counter to counter - maybe less for an epic-x package. Much, Much less than FEDEX) This is very easy to do, but since 9/11 they actually have to send out a person to business (or home) to check that you are not a security risk. You will not necessarily be required to use Delta Dash - you could also use FEDEX, UPS, if timing allows but it gives us that same day option (and it helps me know that you are somewhat legit after Delta checks you out :-) )

This will be prepaid - but remember this is for 5 weeks of Epic-X (you can spread them out for up to eighteen months) first come gets first draft pick.

I am proposing initially $3500, but was thinking of possibly auctioning the first package or two (I will post something a little later - but worst case 3 and 4 would still be $3500). I will require a $500 deposit to hold a reservation (probably via paypal or overnight) with balance due with two to three weeks. I am fine if you are more comfortable wiring the balance to my account at RED so you know the funds will be there for when it is time to take delivery (if they will allow it).

Too bad you're based in the States Michael... I would have jumped on the offer, if it would have been possible to group several weeks... It's a good idea anyway !

Jean:

I'm not completely opposed to overseas, but it would have to be somebody that I could easily trust and verify. It would be possible to group several weeks but probably not in the first month or two unless you bought two blocks (still a pretty good deal-10 weeks for $7K) but I would want to make it so the first time you either fly here (Miami-Ft. Lauderdale so it is pretty easy) or fly me over there so we can meet face to face.

The idea of the "draft" is simply to make sure that we have a system in place that can fairly resolve any schedule conflicts, but with only 3 or 4 other people involved I imagine it would be pretty easy to coordinate amongst us so you could schedule multi-week blocks.

I think it's a good idea Michael. I just think there will be too much shipping back and forth. Perhaps you should make the time increments longer like 2 weeks or 4 weeks and then charge less for each successive period. I think lots of people would be willing to pay even more for the first 4 week block but then less and less as more EPIC's get out there.

Maybe I confused the issue.

As long as there isn't a conflict you can have all five weeks consecutive, or any other combination. We are only talking 5 people so I think it will be fairly easy for someone to say "hey, I'd like it from September 10-20 (1.5 weeks) is that available? or can you guys work around that?" The rotation "draft" is really just to allow a fair way to sort out the first month or two. I will probably have to make it so that there is a two or three day break for shipping back and forth and checkout here between.

There is a strong likelihood that NOT all four of the first weeks would be taken - given people's schedules so you very well may be able to schedule a couple weeks or more right at the beginning. (If they are all taken, the most likely scenario is that everyone will want a week of testing initially). And again if you want to guarantee a two week block right at the start you buy 2 blocks/10 weeks for $7000 total. (still a very good deal.)

$3500 for 5 weeks??? Why so cheap?

thats only $233/day on a 3 day week.

Because it is prepaid at least a few months in advance so will sit there for a while.

I want it to be a bargain for those who do it, and it will simplify my financing for purchasing my Epic.

I tried to figure out how good the deal would have to be get me to pull out a few thousand and put it on deposit for 3 months or more.

someone smart is going to take all the blocks and then re-rent it much higher.

That's fine with me to an extent - I do want to know who is using it - won't do the deal with someone I don't trust to be honest with me and careful how it is used.

Got any two cam shoots in mind?

Yes, you might know who you're renting it out to, but you'll never know who this person will re-rent it out to....there have been REDs stolen before, don't forget that....

No question, but I face that possibility all of the time. Again, there will be some restrictions on re-rental, but trust will be involved.

PS for those wondering what this is about go to the first post.

Honestly i found all of this a little ridiculous... Despite by optimism for Red, If you are on a money paid job, it's too take many unjustified risks to bet today a camera which is still far away be out. Not to mention that like every camera or new ambitious Hardware&Software, you have all the chance that you will have to wait a little period before all the problems get solved and the camera to become a sure bet in a production context...

Now if you are madly in love with technology and not mind to live dangerously, you should really do it off course :)

Vincent:

The point is it is like buying a pack of 5 car washes at half price, or a season pass to Disney World - you don't know when exactly you are going to use it but are sure that you will, enough to more than justify the bargain price. $3500 is not a bad price for a single week rental so if you only used it one week over the year and a half on a paid job you come out fine - any more and you are way ahead. But there are many shoots that can have very flexible scheduling. For me, I do underwater so one of my first shoots will be to hop on a plane to Nassau and shoot the sharks with stuart cove - which I can do basically anytime of the year. Another example would be to go shoot the ruins in Chitzen Itza (Mexico), the Rain Forests in Costa Rica or whatever - they can be scheduled easily once the camera schedule is known. Or if you simply wanted to do some portfolio work; film that short you have been working on or whatever.

Hello Michael,

Crazy but I love it!!!

While I will own 2 Epics, yours will be in much earlier than mine and I will need access to an Epic asap!!! What about the housing??? Is that included in the rental??? Just kidding! But I will need a housing the minute you get the unit in. Will the design be similar to the last rental I did??? Make it short, tight & as light as possible.

Will call you tomorrow to discuss.

be well,
Prio

For those that don't know what this thread is about, see the first post - I am selling 5 week prepaid rental blocks on my very early serial epic-x

Carlos:

Housing will be first thing on the agenda, if I can talk Gibby out of a tattoo for a few days might have a housing before production epics ship. New battery and media options means Housing will be tight and compact. Aluminum and PVC versions. PVC should be light enough for easy surf cam use.
