Hey everyone,

Sorry, I'm a newbie working with Red. I usually onlined using DigiBeta... I just finished editing a short film on FCP using the _m proxy files. Now I'd like to online it for color correction and then burn it onto BD on my MacPro.

What's the easiest way to do that? Is there any way I can import the _h files in a few clicks like batch capture (with DigiBeta)? This would allow me to burn a BD right away... Or do I have to do an EDL and go that route?

Thank you so much for your help!

Andy

The best way to online proxies without getting silly expensive is to buy Crimson Workflow. It uses a FCP XML to associate your cut proxies with the original R3D files so that you can output online footage that matches your edit via either its Redline rendering front-end or passing through Redcine for a 1-light color correction first. If you use Redcine for the 1-light, Crimson can also create a compatible XML so that the newly associated R3D video can be graded with the same cut points you had in the FCP edit AND it will help you create a round-trip back to FCP when you're done.

Anyone looking to maximize quality without having to pony up for a Scratch system should have Crimson. It's a terrific tool.

Correction, red should have provided something like crimson with redcine; but they didn't, so Ian did us all a favor and made Crimson (and It's a terrific tool)

Yeah, I guess if you look at it from that standpoint. But RED also sold us cameras with companion software that's still in beta and hasn't provided thorough documentation for any of their products yet. Yet, we still won't put these cameras down. :)

Crimson is cheap and essential... I'm onlining a 12 min short film from ProRes converted proxies to 2K uncompressed : I need to convert the entire rush for each cut just because I can't bring my IN and OUT in RedCine... Waste of conversion time, waste of disc space...

Red is a camera company, they keep their programs in Beta for a reason.

by the way guys, I was wondering about another workflow for this onlining...
I've tested some _H in an Uncompressed 10 bits FCP Timeline and it seems to work fine (transitions, speed variations, color grading), it didn't some month ago (green screen prob), that's why I decided to use RedCine for onlining to Uncompressed...

My question : about the quality (gamma, chroma, compression...) what is the best solution beetween FCP exported Uncompressed Timeline from proxies and Redcine from R3D ? Does Redcine could do a better job or is it the same ?

EDIT : I've got a bunch of speed variations, that's why I try to avoid to compress the whole rush of each clip using FCP...

The Proxies or "Reference Files" are very low quality and just by looking at them you can tell the difference. The references are quick and dirty, especially dirty...

Never finish in Proxies, If you edit with Proxies expect to Online to R3d.

If you finish your show using the _H proxies, its like you shot it with a really good mini dv camera,
it is not recomended except for offline references

Totally agreed...terrific tool... fastest workflow for me and my system
I recomend

I know u have to promote Crimson, I'd love to buy a license for myself, but I don't own any Red, I'm not producer, I'm just editor...

I keep on telling the producer that Crimson is essential (I don't know why he just want to not buy it at this time, really)...
He's on the list to receive his own Red, I know he will have to buy a license in the future...

That's a confirmation, for me...

Thank u guys...
