Does anyone know how to get similar ("identical" might be too much) colors when viewing MAC-generated material on a PC?

Although harshly worded, the suggestion of calibrating your monitors on the machine creating the content (and the machines viewing it, but not always controllable) is a good thing to do.

But there is a difference in the way Mac and PC computers traditionally process gamma, so a way to get your two worlds together is to set your Macs for 2.2 gamma space and then calibrate the monitor. 1.8 gamma is not advised for any kind of graphic/video environmental work.

Got it!

What kind of white balance do you suggest?

Agreed. Sorry! 'bout the gamma; if you're working with leopard and QT7, check the "FCP compliant gamma" (or something near to those words) on the preferences. Made a world of difference for me.

Rec-709 is platform agnostic. With the release of Snow Leopard, Mac had finally joined the rest of the world in using gamma 2.2. Now there is no more reason to not have an exact matching images on any platform.
