  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

From a buyer's perspective. A bit of math.

A) This thread is for the sale of RED items.

B) This would be like sitting in the middle of a used car lot telling people their used cars are valued even less than what they're trying to sell them for. I understand your point but please go buy a battle tested Scarlet if you can find one. Some of us are trying to find a fair middle ground for cameras that are like new, willing to compromise on cost to sell them, and now these threads are even more disparaging.

You may be crunching numbers but frankly where you're doing it is rude. I'm almost at the point of just keep Scarlet as a B-cam.

Since RED are apparently looking out for new customers by lowering the price of the Scarlet/Epic, I think this thread is a good way to prevent "used" purchasers from needlessly spending more than even RED deems as the worth of used kit.

It might be rude, but it's the "right" thing to do...

That said, it's worth a little more than $4900 for the brain, as he hasn't reduced the estimated used price of the SSD module, lens mount, and AC adapter (which have all also been used, not just the brain as the $4900 implies.)

I think that is actually a pretty good analysis. Despite the fact that the Scarlet pricing did pretty well in all this, it is never going to be about the resale. My suggestion is to plan on keeping and shooting with your Scarlet for just as long as what it shoots is viable. I think that will be a respectable amount of time, even after Dragon comes out. If you shoot a lot, you should get way more than $7K worth of value out of it, even if you discount that sum to present value terms.

To me, the best path to Epic is to make money with Scarlet and then add Epic to my arsenal, or maybe RED will offer an upgrade or trade-in which saves a bit of the overhead discussed above and extracts more value from the Scarlet. That said, as much as I'd like the extra power of Epic, I am not sure I need to own one myself. I can shoot most of what I want on my Scarlet and could rent Epic if I must have 5K or high frame rates. I am sure I'll change my mind over time but right now I am still thrilled with my Scarlet, learning a lot about the R3D workflow, and shooting very happily. It's good to be a RED owner.

Totally with you on that one, Terry. Why upgrade if you don't need to in terms of your regular output? If this is a 4K world the Scarlet is a 4K camera: Amazing image quality and a quantum leap for a former DSLR and Sony EX1 owner. The next most important investment I have on my list, is to buy some cinema lenses, maybe some RPPs or other (faster) lenses, so I can shoot and shoot and shoot.

This thread is a laugh. Now obviously the OP is trying to "talk down prices" well good luck to you.

What everyone seems to be missing is the NEW Scarlet price is basically old 2011 price , which looking at the names posting here many are in that group . 2nd hand yes the prices are lower...so what, didn't need crystal balls to see that one coming....did you ?

As an owner I have no intention of selling until I have wrung every last drop of profit out of it (yep that's the producer in me ) and you know what I reckon that'll be 2014. Even then, when I sell for some low ball 2nd hand figure ( say 2 to 4K for the body ) I will be laughing all the way to the bank.

So stop looking at how much depreciation is eating into your investment and start looking at how much money you can make with your investment !
