Hi!

I remember Jim promised a free sensor upgrade from Mysterium X to Monstro. Is the promise still valid?

In other words, if one buys the Scarlet S35 or the Epic S35 (that come earlier with Mysterium X sensors), will he later get a free upgrade to a S35 sized Monstro sensor?

In fact, is a S35 Monstro sensor in the works for later on?

This was told before (for EPIC only) when RED was developping the old EPIC design

At this point with all the new EPIC models if thay could develope a S35 MONSTRO sensor we could see it listed in the upcoming products with all the others.

I never said any such thing... please don't put words into my mouth. I'm quite tired of this stuff.

I'm used to follow Jim's posts and I don't remember to have read that.

EDIT -- Jim, you beat me to it. :)

I think it's only a free upgrade for people who buy a Epic that has the Mysterium X so thats the Epic S35 brain. But hey we all know the RED motto.

"Monstro" will be a free upgrade to Epic, which will ship standard with the Mysterium X sensor in 2009.

RED Digital Cinema announces the development of "Monstro", the Mysterium® sensor of the future. "Monstro" is the sensor that that removes all limitations in current sensor technology. It is expected to arrive the end of 2010.

"Monstro" will be a free upgrade to Epic, which will ship standard with the Mysterium X sensor in 2009.

We fully understand that our customers want resolution, maximum speed, incredible dynamic range, and low light capability. "Monstro" represents the final frontier in the digital vs. film struggle.

The RED "Mysterium" sensor was a breakthrough that got the RED ONE on the map. Mysterium X takes RED to the next level. "Monstro" is the platform that surpasses all expectations. Sleep tight... the RED Sensor Team is awake.

I don't see how this would make sense for free sensor upgrade on the part of Red.

Would it make sense for any sensor upgrade on the Epic brains, that you have to pay for of course?

Vincent and Leon, what I can understand from that post is:

1st) Jim had no notice (he could't -- he's just a genius but cannot be God :)) about further changes on his program, only known now.

2ndly) If he will wish to comply beyond it, anyway, he always has the possibility to offer to anyone who buys the Epic system (with FF35 brain), the S35 brain before the time for free (in order to a future replacement). It would be nice for all of us. Especially for first RED believers, here from day one.

I second the idea!

Hi Jim,

I was just asking - based on your statement below.

<<"Monstro" will be a free upgrade to Epic, which will ship standard with the Mysterium X sensor in 2009.>>

Reading this, I was hoping that the Mysterium X sensor in the EPIC S35 will be upgraded later on to a Monstro S35 version. Even if you changed your mind about the free upgrade, I'm still hoping that, sometime down the road, the S35 EPIC will also have a Monstro sensor inside for those not interested in the full frame size version.

If I misunderstood, I'm sorry. I certainly don't want to put words in anyone's mouth and I'm certainly not complaining about anything.

All the best.

I think what we have to consider here is that so many things have changed since that statement was made. I'm assuming that back then, EPIC was a different animal... This was long before the "EPIC has changed" post a couple months ago.

RED will always continue to evolve their offerings, but with the new DSMC concept and various brains, the way we will upgrade is by replacing the brain and not just the sensor.

If you want Monstro, you're probably best to go the FF35 route. Or hold on to your RED One and its eventual Monstro upgrade, which is in the plan if I'm understanding this all correctly... But RED One will get a Mysterium-X upgrade option first. I'm assuming Monstro for the R1 is still another year down the road from that or more.

EDIT> To add more to this, there probably isn't much incentive to put Monstro into the EPIC S35. It has a larger photosite size, meaning that S35 EPIC would be limited to a max of around 4K or so. Not that it would be a bad thing. But I'm also wondering if considering the $7K price difference between the S35 and FF35 EPIC brains, if there really is no cost advantage to put Monstro in the S35 brain.

For me, I fully intend to go with the FF35 EPIC and probably run with a PL mount on it most of the time and switch over to Nikon or the new RED Mount if I want the FF35 coverage.

Someone asked this question a couple days ago. Here is Jim's answer:

Exactly. This is what I plan to do too. For FF35 coverage, I will use RED's Electronic Lenses on the new RED-Mount.

This was for the "old" EPIC plan, as far as I remember. It was priced for ~ 40 k $.

Now everything's changed and there are separate options\configurations\prices for a lot of different users. And all these are transparent and announced well before their release.

I don't see a problem.

I think some of this is a confusion from an earlier RED post saying we will also have the option to update (for a fee of course) the senser in the RED 1? Is this still an option?

Jim

but you did say we all get free stock in Red and one week use of the Red Yacht per serial number.:sarcasm:

"Jim promised a free sensor upgrade from Mysterium X to Monstro."

that was for the Epic shown at NAB which was priced at 40k ...
i'm pretty sure RED will let you have it for free if you pay 40k for the Epic S35 brain ??...

That statement was before the whole DSMC system was established. There is now a clear matrix of options showing which cameras will get Mysterium X, which will get Monstro, and how much they both will cost.
