Folks,

As you know, its a non-starter for smaller cities to offer tax incentives for film. At the city level, it is impossible to offer rebates that State governments offer. The return-on-investment that the city would get back would put them in the red on every project.

In that regard, we've been working at the municipal level with the City of Folsom to try to determine ways to alternatively and creatively attract filmmakers to this amazing location for shoots. In addition to the prison, Folsom has an abundance of great spots to shoot including high tech facilities (Intel), factories (Kikkoman and Gekkeikan Sake Factory) natural locations, and a historic downtown area dating back to the Pony Express. The Folsom city government is very open and supportive to projects being shot here.

We are going to run a test project as a proof-of-concept for the City of Folsom.

Effective immediately, Silverado will offer the film production community a free RED camera system--complete and at no charge--to a budgeted feature that can shoot their project here in Folsom.

Its a 3-lens system featuring #21 (CALVIN) with all the trimmings.

The criteria will be a project that is fully budgeted and at or nearly at 100% funding and will shoot the majority of their project (80%) within the city limits of Folsom. Any genre except adult is acceptable.

On a 60-day shoot, it would be worth about $48,000 to a production.

If you have a project that fits this criteria and could shoot in Folsom this year, send me a message to torrey@silverado.cc

We'll need to be selective on the first project, but if it works out well then Silverado will work with City of Folsom to make arrangements to see the program continue on a permanent basis.

Interesting idea, I'll be curious how it works out for you.

best of luck

Very interesting Torrey....a spin on the "think local shoot local" idea i've been kicking around in my head.....question for you: does the project need monied funding? or can deferred contracts up and down the line work for your pilot program as well?

Evolve,

There would be no charge for the camera. The fees are not just deferred--there are no camera fees period.

The feature would otherwise need to be able to function on its own budget. There are no allowances for covering other expenses. If you were looking to work with folks to defer their costs, that would be a job for the producer to handle.

What constitutes a "budgeted feature"? I mean, I can rally a bunch of guys and put together a no-budget indie feature easily. Also, what are the shooting fees in Folsom?

QS,

By "budgeted" feature, I mean something that has a path to being post-produced and distributed as an independent film, not just a pet project that won't ever be seen.

A "no-budget indie" is fine as long as there aren't hiccups along the way internally that would hang the project up once shooting starts.

We'd advocate on the project's behalf to get any potential City of Folsom fees waived.

my folks live in folsom - i used to go out to the hills to shoot in dry grasslands.

it would be amazing to see something shot at the prison.

oh, and production can save money by feeding everybody the costco hotdogs!

Torster, you're making me want to write a prison pic just on that shot alone....must resist......too...many....projects......ahhhh i give up...

so, fine then, dammit. Whose got a prison script they want someone to make?
let's make a reduser prison pic:gun:

I could probably house a few crew members at my parents house (it's huge) -

I wonder if any script has already been written?

We've already got interest in one prison pic that is getting close to production.

This is excellent news! Hopefully I'll have occasion to use it at some point ... in the meantime, I hope some excellent projects come through this :)

I have an interesting true prison story, but I haven't found the "film story" in it yet. But I'll keep this thread bookmarked for when I find the story in it
