Hey guys,
I just wrapped on a nother RED feature last week, and my 1st and i came up with a good idea. Since the red is a Cam-puter would it be possible for a screen grab button to enabled. Nothinh fancy just whats on the EVF or LCD at the moment. Click a button and it just saves it to the SD card slot.

I can then bring a little battery powered photo printer and load the SD card with and hit print. not computer needed because they are jpegs or bmp.. or any other standard image format. 720p is totally fine all i want it to be able to make a little book for camera dpt on 4x5" photo paper.

Im sure others can come up with other uses. I know we can just pull a still frame, and metadata and print things out but that a whole lot of work. I want to just look at a screen grab from a day exterior from 5 days ago and check my look and framing of some shots along with kelvin, shutter angle.

just a quick and dirty. I dont want clean images i want the whole LCD display.

This is a great idea! Maybe we can get some use out of the USB port - a little usb drive in there - single button click and wham - another tiff - great feature idea. No need to get into the RedDrive/CF card workflow in order to get singles for reference.

Nick.

while I think most agree that this would be low on the list of current priorities, I do think it's a great idea and not difficult to implement. :)

My only ideal use for it is for little portable printers that just take SD cards and i can just give it to my assistant and have it print out frames from everything we had done before lunch, though them in a binder and have a picture reference of our film while we are shooting it. Its also great to talk with a gaffer about, with different backlight colors or different locations, especially when you jump around a script so much as you do in indie films.

Hell i can also through them in iphoto and be able to pull them up on my iphone and then i have a reference with me, especially when scouting locations or even just looking a wardrobe... anyways i can see alot of uses. and popping into redalert all the time is really time consuming and it doesnt print in meta data.

Filenames could also be the same as the clip they were pulled from even with an appended TC in the filename so we can always go back and pull it up in Red Alert if we needed a high res still for any other reason.

You can already to this, save a graded 2k tif in Red Alert. I would never want to print something straight off the camera, As good as an Idea it is, its already possible to a greater extent. And I would always want to show off something to its full potential.

AS A DIT, I save a graded 2k Tif for every setup of a scene and distribute them between, Gaffer, Scripty, Director, DP, and Art Dept. They love them,

Your DIT should already do this, I always have screens from the last setup. Including some of the first setups of the shoot. The Last DP i worked with loved the idea... And It was mostly a Courtesy on my part, outside my kit rental.

I think you missed the point when I mentioned I wanted to avoid going to a computer.
I work in rough and tumble indie world.

Secound why would I want anything pregraded on set. It's above what we need. I just need screen grabs with one screen display info.

On set gradding is just to everyone feel good. I just need a refernce with image and info
Not a usless on set grade.

Especially since it will all change depending on workflow, and secound unless your using
3cp your not exporting any CDL info.

It's really just good for agency types. I actually need something that's usfull.

That's a great idea. I feel we have not even started to explore what Red's second recording slot (SD) can do for us.

I know many DP's shoot digital stills on set to send to the color transfer. What could possibly be better than stills from the actual camera?!?

I hope this is on the list for 'secondary priorities' OR it would be a great feature for a third party to add via a Red plug-in architecture. I will be posting more on plug-in idea later.
