  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So this is weird...

Between 120fps and 190fps I'm getting a weird stuttering effect while monitoring (on LCD/EVF AND through HD-SDI). It looks as if I was recording at 8fps or something like that.
Below 120 and above 190 its totally fine. And its happening on multiple resolutions (3k, 3khd, 2k etc.)

Tried it out on another Epic, and same thing!! And one of the cam's is on 3.3.15 and the other on the build 4 beta.

I've never noticed this before.... WEIRD.

Anyone else seeing this? Any fixes?

I've seen things that sound similar. Actually saw them starting around 40fps. On LDC or HD-SDI the stutter was there, but the OLED seemed fine. Couldn't get it out of the LCD, however changing the frequency (Settings > Audio Video > Monitor Control > HD-SDI Frequency) to something higher than 23.98 (29.97 / 59.94) was able to relieve this issue.... Not sure if it will work in your case...

Hmm.. I'll try for the hd-sdi. (@Marcello - yes, did a full reinstall of firmware. And like I said, occurring on two different cameras on two different firmware versions)

Ok, I just tried on a THIRD Epic (again, on a different firmware. This time the old release version 3.3.14). Same thing! This is not camera specific - this seems to be a systematic problem.

I'm really surprised no one has mentioned this before, as it makes for a real problem when shooting on these framerates.

Can someone else check incase I have my idiot cap on and am indeed doing something wrong with the shutter etc?

Ok, good to know Stefan.

I think I just never noticed it before, as 120-190 is zone I think one would tend to use less often. EXCEPT of course when one is shooting max FPS at 3k. If you're doing an HD finish, then shooting 3k is always a nice choice, and this is exactly what lead to one of our clients detecting this error.

It would be great to have RED chime in on this issue. Are they aware of it? Is it going to be addressed in a future build?

No. As mentioned playback ( in cam and afterwards) is a ok. So it's not catastrophic. But at the same time I am really starting to suspect that this is a system-wide problem that effects everyone. It's bad enough that it makes operating a really unpleasant experience, to say the least.

Hmm yeah, a bit hard to tell from the video but looks kind of like that, yes. Although it didn't seem to do it for us anytime except between 120 and 190 fps

Ok Guys!

I just tried on a FOURTH Epic - and same thing!! There is no way this is camera specific. This must be effecting all of us! How come nobody has noticed or said anything about it!?

Try this little science experiment at home:
Go to a 2k resolution. Start at 120fps - all should look fine. Now, slowly go up from there one notch at a time. Pan back and forth as you go. You'll see the stutter gradually get worse, until, magically, at 190 it goes back to being A.OK.

WHAT'S UP???

I have seen it on two different epics as well. This is definitively system wide. I have yet to have someone show me being able to capture at those frame rates without monitor stuttering problems.

ok, good to know. But again, I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this. I wonder why this is happening and if its going to be able to be fixed in a firmware upgrade. . .

Hey

I just wanted to dig up this thread, since I got around to checking again today on 4.0.18 and its definitely still doing it. Wicked stuttering on monitoring between 121fps and 190fps (on monitoring only - records fine).
I mean, its obvious that people aren't complaining because we don't use those frame rates that often, but still! How about someone from RED chimes in on this. Thanks!

I think I've had this at 36fps and certain other varispeed framerates that were not multiples of our 25fps timebase/monitoring frequency while doing lateral parallel tracks past tabletop objects. It spooked us and the clients. Enough for us to prefer shooting whole multiples like 50fps and 100fps instead, which isn't always ideal speed.

It's probably a factor of having to interpolate a Record framerate to the monitoring framerate. It's actually a hard trick to pull off in processing terms for all possible framerate combinations. I suspect that limited signal processing power means some compromise has to be made when deaiing with less common frame rates.

Hope Red chimes in with a definitive answer.

Andreas, have you bothered to file a trouble ticket? That would be first place i think i'd start to at least get a fix in the works and make red aware. I'll be many have not shot at those speeds and that's the reason no issues have come up....
