  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Frame rate conversion

I'm not quite sure why you would want to do this, so I'm not sure if there is a solution for this. REDCINE certainly won't- it will keep your footage in time, not frame-accurate.

I know from my premiere days that there is a way to say "interpret media as..." or something like that when you right-click on it in the project window, and I'm sure it's still there. I'll bet you could interpret a 23.98 as a 29.97 media and it would speed right on up. There may be something similar in FCP, but I can't think of avid doing that.

There's bound to be some hidden consequences from this.

Why do you want to do this again? Why not just shoot in 29.97 or do a reverse pulldown?

In light weight configurations, I have to use the CF cards, which can not do full res 29.97, but this is for broadcast, so I will be releasing at that frame rate.

The slight speed change would actually benefit the nature footage I'm shooting, and I suspect mapping the individual frames is ultimately of higher quality than the pulldown.

I would like to convert 23.98 fps to 29.97 fps WITHOUT using a pull down. No need to invent frames, just change the speed of playback.

Will Red Cine do this?

Any other better ideas?

If you are outputing quicktime files from RC/RA/RR/RL then you can easily do this with Cinema Tools. You simply conform the clips to 29.97. All this does is change the playback speed, like you asked, and it's almost instantly done. No rendering involved.

RedCine will do this if you choose a 29.97 project framerate in the software (even if you shot it with a project framerate of 23.98 in camera) and output to quicktime from there.

Keep in mind all your clips will have to be processed and transcoded in RedCine, so this may not be the fastest way of dealing with this, but it's probably the easiest in terms of using what's already available to you.

Just do the Cinema Tools conform to 29.97 and it will speed up your footage. However, if you are doing a 30 spot or something you need to remember that when you do it, it will be shorter.

On the telecine front, what are you all using to telecine up to 29.97 on the Mac? I've got the Nattress conversion package, but there's got to be a better, less complex way to do a telecine.
