  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Max Framerate: 6K FF @ 40fps, 6K WS @50fps, 4k @60fps??

what is confirmed and what is not?
also, there doesn't seem to be any information online regarding full hd with its fps?
Im just curious and would like to know how much of a slowmo can we get on this camera

im hoping we can get more than a 100fps

If it does 96-120fps even at 2K I will be over the moon, maybe in non global shutter mode, maybe! But it has already been said many times this camera isnt the one if you are looking for high frame rates. DSMC line ups are what you want if thats the case.
 
Jarred's mentioned 6K FF @ 40 fps. Komodo adheres to the general RED concept of higher FPS as you change your format/resolution. Traditionally your frame rate is constrained by the vertical pixels, so as you mentioned 6K WS *should* be higher fps than 6K FF. However, 6K HD will be the height of 6K FF and be 40fps.

It would have been a sexy dance party of it was 6K 60p, but if we can get 6K WS at 48/50fps that's pretty banging at this price point considering the sensor's capabilities.

That also highlights why many will be filming in 5K and likely 4K with it. 2K likely as well for higher fps and that will be rad with global shutter at those frame rates.

If it has a 5K 50 Fps global shutter capability I will be happy. It's getting up to that number that's important as it could also enable a possible HDRx feature. Under 50 fps we can't get PAL HDRx.
 
i would be happy with 6K FF at 60fps with a 8:1 compression even

we can wish cant we :smiley:

Since Komodo is 6K at about the same physical size as Helium at 8K, it would appear that Komodo 5K and 4K would be physically larger than Helium (i.e. less crop at those resolutions) and presumably larger pixels.

Hey Phil, so 4K on Komodo will be similar to a Micro 4/3rd FOV? Thanks.

I think for Komodo to be competitive, it should do 60fps in Super 35mm FOV in Non-Global shutter mode. 60 fps in Super 35mm FOV is kind of a must for a lot of people.

I would be happy if Super 35mm FOV in 4K can be achieved with scaling down in camera? Sony Super 35mm in HD looks great, and it's just scaled down from 4K. I know this goes against Red's philosophy of anti down-res'ing, but if other companies like Sony, Canon and Arri can make it look good I'm sure Red can as well.

For people in PAL 5K 50p will most likely be crucial, albeit that will come already with a slight crop. And if HDRx is added, even better! As for 2K, whatever the FPS will be, that's less interesting for me as it'll have a substantial crop from an already tiny sensor, so not so appealing...4K 60p might be a good compromise between acceptable crop/ FOV and FPS.

In NTSC land, I'd be fine with 5K 60fps as it's a not too big of a crop vs. Super 35mm.

I may be mistaken, but I thought Jarred said that they’ve been so pleased with the performance of the global shutter mode, so far, that they may not implement a switching option and leave it global shutter only.

Correct.
As FPS or image quality is not affected, the only reason to allow for a Rolling Shutter Mode is to match the jello effect of the DSMC2 line or other cameras.
Or, if a DoP wants to use it for creative effects.

I never got a red camera before, but I am planning to buy the komodo for my business. So my questions is, if this camera has 50 fps at 6k, will be possible to shot higher fps at lower resolution for example ? How many fps can I shot at hd quality ?

I assume you are referring to both 2K and HD (1920x1080)
In that case, I think you are covered :)
