  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOUNDRY STORM to rock NAB!

off course...because otherwise we have a camera that cannot even playback on a supercomputer.....
this does not make it 5000 value compared to what the hardware market offer you for 5000...
you might even say that the value is 25000 because it allows you to be an efficient dit on that that can ""even playback on set""....abut think about this:
Aja kona 3
Nvidia quadro FX 5800
A Mac Pro

...hardware that cost 3000 USD and that people are using successfully to make money and builds career in many many creative fields ....the rocket is 5000 and just playback 1 camera codec...

doesn't matter if is really needed , is overpriced compared to the worldwide hardware offer

First, playing back 4k RAW at a full debayer is a huge deal. Not much else can handle raw yet, at that or any size. Supercomputer or not, the card does it for the computer, so a "super" computer isn't needed. With a mobile rocket from Maxx Digital, I can also playback off of laptop.

I'm not sure what other market you're comparing to. Even with a Quadro FX card & Kona 3, they can still chug on RGB formats.

If seeing what your image actually looks like is important, then I can't see how you can deal without one. Sounds like your beef is with the RAW formats, not the hardware to decode it.

Then don't buy one, and enjoy your $3000 gpu. The quadro does not do what a RedRocket does, and is manufactured by a GPU company. If ARRI made a GPU solution to work with scanned in film they would charge $100k for it and kick you in nuts as part of the purchase process.

I am sorry but that is just not a sound argument. Who else provides a useable camera capable of 4k and provide an excellent solution for playing that back that doesn't cost $100k ?

It really comes down to the right tool for the right job. Can you frame up a house with a rock, sure. The carpenter would prefer to use a hammer because that saves time, improves accuracy (less smashing your thumb) and gets their job done quicker than by using only a rock. In the end, it's the customer who gives you the deadline and you work backwards to a proper solution. Does the customer need on set realtime transcoding by morning, or can they afford to wait longer to do it without the right tool for that job?

You can have a workflow to "playback 1 camera codec" just fine on that hardware, but you will have to knock down the "working" resolution and debayer algorithm so your machine can deal with the throughput of data, but you can still get the job done. It just takes more time to do it. If the client needs it done faster, you bill for the extra hardware required to do it in the time frame the job requires.

Back on topic.. another guess on Storm..

On-set look generator that not only generates looks on set for luts, but also generates look plug-in's based on the looks for various NLE's. I can then import the media and the plug-in onto preferred NLE. Then, apply the look plugin to the matching clips. Since lots of plugin's are realtime, this will do great with CS5.

This could save ton of money and time, and I may lose my job :willy_nilly:

Something is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. From posts on this forum it seems that there are a VAST number of people who disagree with you on the RED Rocket's utility.

I had the very first Kona HD card from AJA - as I remember it - it cost about $11,500 - about twice the cost of the first 4K card from RED.

The most painful part about those cards back then was when Decklink released their first card the the price of an HD card dropped from around $15,000 to $1,500 over night.

I bought my first AVID in 1998 it was $100K. and that AVID was just a 'modified firmware' Targa2000 board in a beige G3 and some IP.

It's not about the cost it's what it can net you in productivity/creativity/billing... cost is only a part of the overall equation.

IMO REDRocket when properly put to use will more than pay for itself in man hours alone...

Damn The Foundry knows how to design a sexy UI, gray and orange just tugs at my heart strings.

Please please please let Storm also be a full NLE. . .

I am so far behind when it comes to how company's merge and take over other companies these days, but AUTODESK seems to be able to take any company it wants. Is it still just a matter of buying all the companies stock and forcing a buy out??

Anyway, point being that The Foundry is probably the biggest thorn in AUTODESK's side right now. If AUTODESK can't figure out a way to buy out The Foundry, we might see AUTODESK finally taking the zillions of lines of good code they have and release it to the masses at a reasonable rate.

Or maybe its just a David and Goliath thing and AUTODESK is going down, not matter what.

Well we will see What the storm is all about in a few days,
no one will really be taken by storm if
1. its just a look creation tool, there are a few good ones out there a powerful free one
2. just a finishing tool
3. just a grading tool

now if its really a smoke competitor Assimilate will have to worry not Autodesk, Remember Autodesk is a multibillion dollar tech company that has a broad range of industry leading technologies, it can lower the price of smoke to $100 overnight or give it away for free like Toxik. Assimilate has the best looking and most innovative interfaced finishing software out there next to speed-grade. If Storm is anything potentially close to smoke..........

It "seems" to be RED centric apps..let's see next week

If a company is listed on the stock exchange a hostile takeover is possible, hard but possible. If a company is privately held then you cant force them to sell to you - you could make them a $$$$ offer - but then Autodesk would need to answer to its shareholders as to why this was a good financial move. (As autodesk is a traded public company). The foundry is privately held. The foundry isnt going anywhere - anytime soon

Whatever comes around I have a big love for THE FOUNDRY, I think they are the first company that really gets it.

Its not about Autodesk anymore with high end prices, attempt of total market domination and finally one ALRIGHT priced app, (SMOKE ON MAC)

Its not about Apple f***ing up the market by taking 50k apps and making them free (with no support and no future of the product). Then everyone is an editor and a colorist and a compositor.

It's somewhere in the middle. Apps made by artists, priced for artists, but with highest level capabilities.

If it was only Red centric, Stu Maschwitz would not put his name on it. He is a champion for the cottage industry filmmakers

Its funny how we often talk about these companies like we are real business analysts, when the real truth is we are just filmmakers enthusiastic about the type of tools we use, and appreciative when innovative companies like Red and the Foundry intuitive and highly productive tools at an affordable price point.
Its not that we cant afford $5000 for a Redrocket, its that two weeks after we spend the money, a company comes out with a yellow rocket that essentially does a better job.
we know what all the tools and workflows are capable of, we just don't trust that they will be the best in one week. Our projects happen on a daily or weekly basis, to invest in a product one day and not be able to be competitive the next is really frustrating.

That's why as filmmakers we should focus on the story you create visually and aurally regardless of tools that are used. Waiting around for the next best or lower thing is never going to work. Jump in and make stories with what you have at hand. Some great films were made with all that "old" technology.
