  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOUNDRY STORM to rock NAB!

I posted that on 11-20-2009. So ... patience my friend. Patience.

I'll let them know because of my big mouth they only have another 7 months or less to finish it!!

Are you talking the same thing Mark ? the finishing tool you are talking about is this one ?

Of course this has to be announced RIGHT AFTER I deliver a finished, graded feature for my friend.

I remember saying a month ago: "Do we have to finish your film now? I'll need to buy all of this stuff that's about to go obsolete. If you wait until after NAB, I bet I can do the whole thing for a much better price. All of this cool stuff is coming out from everyone for NAB that'll make RED finishing sooo much easier."
"Well, we might be in Tribeca. Which starts in April," he said.
"Oh," I said.

BTW, so Mark: you were talking about this not and CS5? Come on, I'm sure you can at least confirm or deny without being pursued by lawyers.

Also, hopefully at some point, RED will trust The Foundry enough to let them write a GPU REDCODE decoder? I'm pretty sure a top nVidia or ATI card could decode REDCODE in realtime too if someone wrote a decent algorithm.

It can't yet. Certain parts of wavelet decoding don't do well on GPUs and going back and forth slows things down too much. It's an active area of R&D for us.
Rocket + GPU however is a killer combination because it leaves the GPU free to do layers of grading, etc.

That explains a lot!

The Foundry has some awesome plugins coming out as well, they are going to rock this year.

Get ready for a wicked sneak peak at RED DAY / Reduser Vegas 2010!

That looks promising - I can't wait to see the full interface, because Nuke's CC tools are pretty much dark ages Computer Science - style gizmos if you compare them to eg something visual and easy like Discreet's Color Warper. Or Frischluft Fresh Curves. Or even Apple Color. This looks kinda cute, like Magic Bullet Looks or something.

You can't sneak us a peek of the secondary color-correction interface, can you?

:P

I see a laptop without a Red Rocket driving a color-centric app... can't wait to know more.

well....an application that decode R3D well without the rocket (like the mercury engine in CS3) for dailies would be what i am really waiting for...

i really think that the RedRocket is very overpriced.. there is such of power in a 3000 USD workstation that spend 5000 only to decode R3D sounds too pricey (considering that will probably not decode even Epic footage....)

i always thought the right price for the rocket should be 2000 USD....

I have to say that I've gotten $5K worth of value out of Red Rocket in one job.

Thus far, it's been worth every penny. I won't DIT a red job without it.

off course...because otherwise we have a camera that cannot even playback on a supercomputer.....
this does not make it 5000 value compared to what the hardware market offer you for 5000...
you might even say that the value is 25000 because it allows you to be an efficient dit on that that can ""even playback on set""....abut think about this:
Aja kona 3
Nvidia quadro FX 5800
A Mac Pro

...hardware that cost 3000 USD and that people are using successfully to make money and builds career in many many creative fields ....the rocket is 5000 and just playback 1 camera codec...

doesn't matter if is really needed , is overpriced compared to the worldwide hardware offer
