Hi,

I recently read the Red ultimate guide, there's a quick interview with Brook Willard in there where he talks about formatting cards.

He says he formats card in the way that the old footage is not completely erased. I'm guessing it's something like a quick erase on OSX where the old files are over written as new ones are created.

I'm guessing you could do that with disc utility, but isn't the Red going to ask you to format not matter what?

Is there a way to trick the camera in thinking it's already formatted the card?

Anyways, it seems like a good way to have an additional backup!

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

If you move the folder on the card to the trash, but leave the .profile intact, the camera will recognize the card as formatted (but with a MAG number already used.)

If you use R3D Data Manager, you have the option of formatting the Card so it is ready to shoot - and with a new, unique MAG number.

What happens is the MAG number is already used? Will it create a new one? or will it reuse it (reuse the number)?

Thanks!

Please don't ever do that. It's a bad idea because it can lead to unnecessary fragmentation.

Also, we only recommend formatting on camera.

If you've opened a .profile file in textedit you'll find that its a configuration file and the Mag number can easily be changed and read by the camera.
