Hi guys. My contact from Formatt-Hitech has emailed me this press release. It's an open event. Free to attend by all. He also said that the 30% discount is still active for REDUser members on all products on their website. If you have had your code, it still works. If you want one, let me know...

This is the press release he sent:

Thanks for the heads up Owen!

I went along yesterday to the new Pinewood store. Met the lovely people from Formatt-Hitech and got to see and play with their new Firecrest filters. First impressions are excellent. Messed around with various grades on an Epic/Ultraprime setup in store and the results were fantastic. Even at high stops I didn't notice any colour shift. Thanks to James, Rod, Anne and co, for being so helpful and welcoming.

I also had a wander around Pinewood as of course the are filming Star Wars there at the mo. There are little hints at production all over the place but security is tighter than a rusty thumbscrew ;)

if you don't have it let me know and I'll PM one to you.

Owen.

Owen, I don't have it and JUST ordered one to test out...can you send me the info? Thanks!

Owen,

Just PM'd you. Thanks again! Very timely. Does anyone have any other reviews on these?

Owen,

Much appreciated! I'll let you know how it goes. I talked with someone on the tech side (technical director I believe) and this is what they said. I had some questions about how these filters would be with the Epic. Below are my concerns followed by their response:

RE: Firecrest Filters

I am considering a set of filters and I have a couple questions. The filters will be used on a Red Epic with the MX sensor. I understand that Hot Mirror's seem to work better than just IR filters on this sensor. Is this something you've heard or seen in your research? I have read online from various Epic users that some of the best filters that "play" nicely with the Epic MX sensor are the Formatt-Hitech Glass Hot Mirror IRND filters. Yet, I have also been reading about your new Firecrest filters, which seem to have a lot of newer technology behind them. Here are my questions (and their response):

1) Are the new Firecrest filters Hot mirror filters?
No

2) Are the Firecrest filters, given their new technology, a better filter for the Red MX sensor?
Independent testing done says yes. Has much flatter attenuation.

3) If given the option of the two filters, which one would have the better IR protection for the Epic MX sensor?
Both will have IR protection but, as stated above, the attenuation of the Firecrest is much better. Even though the original HMIRND's work, Firecrest is superior.

I'll let you all know what I think when I get them!

Codes please ;)

Bob,

Based on the response I got back from the reps at Firecrest (I posted it on the front page), are they correct- in terms of them being better for the Epic (MX) than a hot mirror IRND filter? I ordered a set of three and I should get them by Wednesday. Unfortunately, it won't be that sunny but I'm still going to take them for a spin. I am hoping that all I'll need is a basic tiffen hot mirror for inside use with Tungsten lighting, and a couple of these for when shooting outside...that way, when I upgrade to the Dragon sensor, all I'll have to get rid of is the hot mirror.

And what filter strengths did you get Bob?
