  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Format Time too long

Formatting red-drive

Formatting red-drive

Yes, for RED-DRIVE formatting should take one minute max. Disconnect it and try again.

Re formatting off-camera. You can certainly erase the data off-camera, but you MUST format it on the camera anyway to get the correct configuration files on the drive...

Yes, it's a RED-Drive. I will try again. Thanks for the help!

We had an occasional problem with this quite a while back before Red updated our battery plate, etc. and it seemed like it was power related and may have also been specific to a particular build.

Basically when using battery power we would occasionally have drive formatting freeze and just go on and on. Eventually we would have to power down to get out of it. After that when we restarted the Red wouldn't recognize the drive until we actually went to plug in power instead of battery. This happened a few times and happened with different drives and batteries so we knew they weren't the problem. We haven't had this problem since our camera came back from the audio board upgrade.

I doubt this is your problem and it was a while back for us, but if you keep having problems and are using battery power you may want to try plugging the power into AC for formatting.

Best,
Walter

Thanks Walter, it helps to hear others trouble-shooting steps. i was formatting on AC power and let it run for hours just to see what it would do... basically nothing!

So I powered down and now, as you said, the drive is not being seen now.

Ok, that was probably not a good idea...

Any further suggestions? I will search here for how to format on a computer! I really think the manual (at least the one I have is, in so many words.).. kind of crap (sorry RED). Here on the foums thoguh, is a God send!

On a Mac use Disk Utility.

Under the "Erase" tab select MS DOS from the Volume Format drop down menu.

EDIT: This is actually what Brice was talking about. Erasing the drive on the computer by formatting it. And then formatting it on the camera for your Time Base settings.

Erasing media on a Macintosh personal computer

On a Macintosh computer, connect the CF card via a CF card reader, or the RED-DRIVE™ or
RED-RAM™ via a standard FireWire 400 / 800 cable, and then open Disk Utility.

Carefully choose the drive from the list and select the Erase tab.

Then choose MS-DOS (FAT) as the Volume Format.

You can add a Name if you wish, but the camera will overwrite this.

Now before proceeding, double check that this is the CF card or RED-DRIVE™ or RED-RAM™
that you wish to erase, and click the Erase key.

When the pop up window appears click on the Erase button.

When the media is erased, drag its icon to the trash can and physically disconnect it.
