  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

For those using ESATA and REDMAGs....

I just read this in the RED STATION REDMAG 1.8 manual...

"IMPORTANT: ONLY Silicon Image or Highpoint SATA cards will connect to RED STATION modules through eSATA at this time."

This is important for me as I had hoped to attach these units using my current ESATA devices.

Can anyone at RED confirm that this is still the case? Do I have to buy one of the cards to use ESATA? If so, will this change soon?

Those are the ones we've verified. What card are you using?

Thanks for the quick response Deanan.

My Express card is a PNY, which may work, actually. Aren't those just rebranded SI?

...not sure about the ports on my tower, all I've found so far is that they use a JMicron SATA controller.

that would me kind of odd. I never seen an Esata device requiring a specific Esata chipset/card to work.

Can't wait to get my "Hershey Bars" so I can try it!!!

SiliconImage3132 is the best out of the three Chipsets, 99% of e-sata cards use this chipset. I highly recommend staying with SiliconImage. However be very aware that depending on which siliconImage card you buy will determine which driver to install. If your Card supports RAID, you will need to install the RAID5 driver. If It doesnt support RAID, you must install the other non-raid driver

Sonnet makes an Expresscard Pro, it is Marvell... I've had numerous issues with it. Stay away. it is not friendly to various pieces of hardware like SiliconImage is.

ATTO H680 SAS/SATA HBA is rocking along just fine with RED STATION CF here. Haven't got the 1.8" or 2.5" modules just yet. I see no reason it wouldn't work just perfect.

...Also seems to work perfectly with the CalDigit Fasta 1ex ExpressCard adapter. ...And the eSATA port on my HP 8470W notebook.

I would recommend NOT connecting the RED Station modules via any port expanders or multipliers.

So there are some unverified solutions out there that are working.

...good to know.

I mentioned that in the other thread

and suspect that, as with the drives, those were the only cards tested to date (now confirmed by Deanan's post in this thread). I have a Sonnet PCIe card in a MacPro and that works.
