  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

For Sale: Zeiss MkIII Super Speed Set

About 5K a lens for standard speeds in good optical/mechanical order. So $25K for the above mentioned set.

I've said it before, I think Standard speeds are the most underrated glass out there.
They match S4s for sharpness and beat them for CA control, they also out resolve Super Speeds below T4. The only thing to really complain about is the tiny barrel size and the mild portholing which I've never even seen in actual shooting.

Things are coming and they'll be really nice. Come to our booth at NAB to see some. We expect to have some product available for sale immediately.

I've been hearing about these for some time now.....

All speculation I've heard points to an established lens manufacturer.

NAB may have my CC in trouble! :innocent:

Yes you do, but supply and demand changes this. Three years ago great lenses cost 1/3 of what they do today, simply because there was a limited number of lenses for a limited market.

Now instead of selling a few hundred sets, a smart manufacturer may sell 5000 sets, particularly when Epic/Scarlet comes out.

We all know that quality lenses are very difficult to make and it's not just supply and demand, but the demand has just gone through the roof so hopefully the suppliers are listening! :)

Jim is right. If a manufacturer realized the opportunity and had the capacity to act on it, they could saturate the industry with low cost, quality glass, effectively lowering the value of lenses and turning the buck they're making into something far more valuable.
But then again.. I don't think any manufacturer can produce what I consider a quality lens, at a consumer affordable price.

There is no way I can do $52,000 for a set of lenses. For me, it's rent and wait. This will all change, but for now, I will have to pace myself.

I can only hope the birger mount will hold me over for a while

Jay

and just like the stock markets of the past few months, 2009 will see a drop in the used lens market, as these newer, modestly priced, and good quality kits of glass come online.....

not that the older zeiss lenses won't be as good (or better) but these new ones will create a buzz and garner some industry acceptence in the indie/music video type worlds...

my two cents anyways...

Hmm glass is better then gold :) Wasn't Manhattan purchased for a few glass pearls? My bet is not on PL in the future. I think Canon is the way to go. ..if birger ever ramp up :)

Purpose built

Purpose built

True Cine lenses are simply the best choice for making making moving pictures, particularly if your projects regularly employ modern camera support systems like jibs, steadicams, etc and require rack focusing moves. Affordable purpose built cine primes with decent optics that open up to at least T1.4 should sell very well and I sincerely hope they stick with PL style mounts.

I gotta say that this set of Zeiss MK-3 Speeds is a steal of a deal.
And if they are coming through Duclos then . . . well let me just say I'm salivating right now.
I wish I could pull the trigger & pony up the dough.
These puppies will be working non stop very soon.

Contrary to what I've been reading here I think that lens prices will NOT drop in 2009.
With more & more cameras being dumped into the market they will in fact go up.
Wait until all the rental houses come together & raise thier pricing, WHOA NELLY!!!
And then there's this guy, Evin Grant. He made an excellent point . . The Zeiss Standard 2.1 Primes are excellent glass as well.
Basically you get what you pay for folks. Blair just nailed it.
Zeiss & Cooke Lenses are superior to whatever Wanna-Be glass hits the streets.

What HAS gone down & what will continue to go down is the rental rate of the Red One Cameras.
And with more & more cameras being released it's going to continue to fall.

Wait & See.
Watch & Learn.

Sorry guys- this set is sold. Keep your eyes peeled for whatever comes up next.

I am surprised nobody here mentioned the Angenieux Rouge lenses. They are as good as their film counterparts, and priced for the Red. There are manufacturers making lower price high quality lenses aimed at the Red market already.

And I too have heard about what is coming for NAB from a very well respected non-russian manufacturer, which will start to level the playing field. More and more options will be available, it is just annoying that it is taking so long. The MPs will probably still be at the top of the game, but as the euro comes down and more lens makers offer practical solutions (photo lenses for filmmaking just does not work for me), including whatever Red has up their sleeve, prices of used "old" lenses will definitively be affected.

It seems like yesterday that people where saying to invest in real estate, that renting is just throwing money out the window. As we all have seen lately, markets can fluctuate. Bubbles do explode. The current high price of glass is a bubble, and anyone that does not see that is just plain blind. Of course, if you need the lenses now, and you can make large amounts of money from them now, it makes sense to get them.

I just used the 30-80 on a shoot and it was a nice lens. And for a new cine lens price is not too bad. Too rich for my blood right now in terms of buying one, but as a rental absolutely.

affordable prime lens set...

affordable prime lens set...

I´ve heard rumors that we´ll see a well known lens design brought back to live again for a compatible price in 2009... I will wait until that dream comes true...

new excellent primes (think ultra prime/master prime level) will come soon from germany. arri, zeiss etc all come from the same manufacturer and never planned for econmy of scale.

soon is less than 6 months from here.

f1.4/t1.6 for the inexpensive lenses.

the floating inner lenses non-breathing design lenses (f1.2/t1.4) are much more expensive than the zeiss HS 1.3 level non-compromise design (f1.4/T1.6) ones.

prices are still discussed, but think ~2000-3000 is an easy route to go.
so hold your breath.

production capacity, as far we oversee Quality assurance right now, is ~300 lenses a month.

same glass as arri (manufactured by schott), rugged design, proven design.

The PL mounted prototypes (14, 18, 25, 32, 50, 75, 100) are in testing right now as we speak.

delivery in HIGH quantities is 2009.

prices for the F1.4/T1.6 are probably *really* low. lower than anything announced.
for the F1.2/T1.4 its a decision to be made.

You will never see the design of the original SuperSpeeds return. The lead content of the glass is too high, which makes it a banned product for international trade.

correct.

for the upcoming design, which is 2008, the decisions however are different.
a) go direct distribution as red w/o any distributor in the markets asia / us north / us mid&south /etc
b) sell direct at break neck price or indirect through resellers & distributors
c) take preorders according to the new methodology or delivery and sale as it used to be once
d) allow meanwhile usual quality assurance or keep up the traditional local (made in germany standard) - so far no one sees a way around the later, which results in ~ +10% price and ~ -10% delivery speed
e) sell the prototypes at once. today, or wait for the second manufacturing run.

lead is the last of the problems for the new prime sets right now. basically, its not even a problem at all.

p.s.

if anyone is interested in buying right now, please pm me.
we are still evaluating the market and are undecided about pricepoint and timing.

the first batches of prime sets are already manufactured.
quality of the new lenses is excellent. think for the low price primes between zeiss old and arri ultraprimes with a faster stop and for the top-end design maximum.

The prototypes *might* be sold - we are talking dozens and dozens of lenses here - but this is undecided as of now.

so feel free to PM if you might be intersted.

price will be probably ~2000/3000 per prime lens, depending on demand.

Are you talking about 2000/3000 euros or USD? Either way that's a pretty good deal, but really stinkin good if ISD. An entire set of 5 for under $20,000 Heck, get most of the set and your still under $25,000. Charge the same rate as standard speeds and it a year's time you should have them paid off (although, I'd charge as least as much as super speeds and maybe a little bit more since they are a newer design.)
