20/20 hindsight

20/20 hindsight

I guess the price is fair in the current market and is about a third of the cost of an equivalent Master Prime set. Still a mind blower compared to what these lenses would have fetched 3 years ago.

If I could go back in time I would have sold everything I had to buy used PL glass back in 2004/2005 and now I could just sell a few lenses every time I fancied a new bauble.

Curious...

What would these lenses have sold for used in 2004? Half the current price?

I have a feeling something drastic is about to happen in the lens market in a few months time.

That is a great price for what I am going to bet are PERFECT lenses having the Duclos name behind them.

I think that if anybody out there wants to complain about the prices of glass these days they should call Red One & thank them.

What do you expect when the market is flooded with cameras?

Personally I would like to thank Red One. My lenses have never been so valuable.

Supply & Demand folks.

Tony, could you elaborate?

You get what you pay. Yesterday I shot with an UP 8R and a UP 14mm. The UP 8R is a striking SFX lens but the UP 14mm is a brilliant, every-day piece of glass. It has a nice dimesionality, it keeps straight lines rectangular and is really sharp. It costs more than 11k EUR. Not cheap but worth every penny.

If you want T1.3, light weight and a modern focus throw you have to buy SuperSpeeds Mk3s. Brilliant glas.

I've got SuperSpeeds Mk2s and love them, use them a lot and keep them. But I'm going to be in the market for an Angenieux 15-40 or a set of UPs in the wider range (leaving out the 8R). Have to make up my mind.

I don't see the cineglass market to be revolutionised. If I would be in the market for great SuperSpeeds I would not hesitate. A set of 5 UPs will be more expensive, not better but different, very different.

A couple of pennies worth.

There has been more than a few hints (bandpro being the most reliable) that there are new lenses coming into the market..

I feel the safest lenses (as in price 2nd hand) are MP. Interestingly these SS are more than half the price of a new set of MP. This SS set will be 'as new' and if you can put them to work go for it!... If you want them to sit around on a shelf as an investment be careful.

2nd prices are tricky. If the 'new lenses' are fast SS prices will be affected if they are slow then less so.

I'm guessing this is what Tony means..

Hi Michael,

we all know that Band Pro, known as a high-end "pro" HD rental and sales company, won't bring indie filmmaker's dream of cheap MPs to life. If Band Pro would create a new series of cine glass, I highly doubt that these lenses would be "cheap". Their DigiPrimes are all but cheap. And BTW, why isn't there a 18mm RedPrime? I can only guess but I never saw a 18mm still glas with T 1.9 or even faster.

I can clearly see that SuperSpeeds MK3s at the above advertised price point are not a meaningful speculation object. But since Obama is on the helm don't we go back to work and earn money with real work?
Anyone buying a prestine set of such high quality fast primes will enjoy them for a very long time.

I find it interesting that so many people wait for the messias-lenses. They won't come. And even if you consider to buy a set of RedPrimes for 20,000 messian USD you won't get a 18mm T1.9. For many a dealbraker.

Things are coming and they'll be really nice. Come to our booth at NAB to see some. We expect to have some product available for sale immediately.

I know you can't give us any hints Mitch, but if I used an adjective to describe them and that adjective was "elite" would I be getting warm?

Or if I was playing a rhyming game and I was asked what rhymed with price, would I be getting warm?

Or if I said no usual suspects allowed, would I be getting warm?

I don't expect to get an answer, but it's kind of fun trying to guess anyway. You could just provide a numerical answer 1, 2, or 3. If that provides us a hint without giving away the surprise.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I really doubt we'll those new bandpro pl mount lenses as fast as 1.3. Even Reds are at 1.9. Shooting a great deal of night scenes on the films i worked on, 1.3 really comes in handy.

Why not the 2 Russian manufactures of PL glass both make fast lenses.

Also with significant sales opportunity mini MP are possible. Strip out the fancy cams the 2 floating groups (they'd breath like SS) the LDS system and the swappable dual markings and they would be much cheaper and also still very desirable.

Trust me I own lenses I don't want PL glass to come down in price. Its just seems likely!

PS I would have bought MPs if they were either: 25% cheaper or smaller..

Interesting thread guys, it is always nice to read your posts.

Noob Speculation Alert: What will Red do to the market once their Primes are announced?

Nice set of course, they look sexy.

If they could do a complete super speed 1.3 5 lens set at 20 grand that would be fantastic for all of us. Even elites aren't that low in price. This huge announcement has to do with "affordable" new pl mount lenses. Affordable is subjective..but just analyzing the post..the bandpro guy emphasized that while the quality is going to not be "digi prime" quality..the price will be really good.

I'll place my bet that these lenses that mitch and bandpro are talking about will not be super speed lenses.

Yes you do, but supply and demand changes this. Three years ago great lenses cost 1/3 of what they do today, simply because there was a limited number of lenses for a limited market.

Now instead of selling a few hundred sets, a smart manufacturer may sell 5000 sets, particularly when Epic/Scarlet comes out.

We all know that quality lenses are very difficult to make and it's not just supply and demand, but the demand has just gone through the roof so hopefully the suppliers are listening! :)
