FOR SALE : Super speeds - freshly serviced

Opton

Opton

Hi everyone!

I also got a set of opton lenses. With a much later serial number starting with 65.....something.

On the 18mm and 25mm the focus turns 170 degrees. On the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm it turns 360 degrees.

I have always considered these as mkII since I can´t see any difference.
I don´t know anything more, but they are great lenses!

Hey Roger.. want to sell them? :holloween:

Happy Halloween.

Hi!
Not really. I have a P+S adapter I rather not be stuck with, without the lenses...

I'll buy both and then you can get a RED?

Just kidding and have a great weekend... (ok, maybe I'm not?)

Cheers,
Billy

You can buy both and I´ll take a long holliday.....
Have a nice weekend!

Yeah a going price for lenses like these would be nice...i noticed it was asked about more than once and no-one wanted to offer up a value.
Maybe even a set price for MK1 MK2 and MK3's...

Bris here is my read on Super Speed prices as of our little economic hiccup.
All of these price are speculative and are where I would price the glass if I wanted to move it in less than a month. People can and usually do hold out for more.
Also this is assuming great optical and mechanical condition and average cosmetic wear for age.

MIII... Most desirable and rarest $50-60K
MII (360º rotation) most common $35-45K
MI/MII early/MII Opton (170º rotation) $25-35K
"B" Speeds (Fully rebuilt and with PL adapters and gears) $20-$25K

Unfortunately, despite being identical in just about every way the Optons seem to sell for less than the West German versions, they're actually the best deal. I chalk this up to pure ignorance but that's my observation.

Not to tangent, but optically can you visually spot a difference in the footage between them or is it all in the "performance" of the lenses?

I'm very drunk :w00t: so I will keep this short.

They are 100% identical, only difference is the actual engraved ring where it says Opton. This I can say without any problem since I've seen it with my own eyes.

It was always stated that these were Optons, which only means they're made for Eastern Germany market (still says made in West Germany BTW) and it was also shown in the pic.

Actually I believe that they have been used less (certainly seem that way) simply because they were sold in East Germany. Now this is my perception from what the condition these lenses are in, but I would believe that the film industry for these lenses where stronger on the West side? Or these lenses where just simply in a home where they were very well taken care of, no matter what they've served me well.

All I wanted to do was to sell a couple of lenses that are in really really really really really good shape, near mint. ESPECIALLY since I just spent a lot of $ making sure they were, with lens technicians that know these lenses inside and out, A LOT MORE THAN ANY OF US in this thread.

Over and out

Edit: I edited shape to "condition these lenses are in". Saw my post and realized that could be vastly misunderstood

I have a set of MIII, also in very very very very very good shape. They're NOT Optons  (not that it should matter). Also serviced with lens technicians WHO KNOW THEM MORE THAN ANYONE OF US ON THIS THREAD. I could consider to sell them as well

Arghhh so you're the one who has my set's 85?

The rest of my set is also 65... something hahahaha

I saw that I made the mistake of not blurring the serial #, sorry, that was very stupid of me.

bob by the way the master primes is the latest version of the super speeds. as the ultraprimes are the latest version of the zeiss primes t2.1
and if you think your purchasing mkii and not mki go ahead and bye the set it is worth much less
evin grants post is correct you are selling mki the b speeds were never called mki simply
t1.4 b speeds. and if you are selling mkii than what are the next two sets called mkiii and mkiv there was no mkiv
Stuart

It was a joke!!..english humour maybe?

haha. Mitch, I am gonna stay out of this one.
Zeiss doesnt recognize any of the "Mk" nomenclature.
It's just an industry adopted system of naming.
Otherwise, Zeiss would have engraved "Mk whatever" on each lens.

They actually did on the 10-100 T2 with the 87mm diameter front. It is engraved with a roman numeral II. But right, not on any other lenses they produced.

do you have any larger images?

Hahahaha very funny.

These lenses are long gone.

I do have a West german set of MK II's (360 degree turn - except for the 35mm, which is 170degree) + a Standard Zeiss 135mm T2.1 - FOR SALE.

PM me if anyone is interested.

Settling the Mk. I/II/III debate - once and for all!

Absolutely right Matt. Neither ARRI nor Carl Zeiss has ever used the "Mk" naming convention. ARRI USA does call them Super Speed in price lists and advertising materials. This is also not an official name. The only "official" name is High Speed Primes. But, obviously, Super Speed is correct for all the f1.2-f1.4 primes.

Earlier in this thread I had asserted that on the East Coast, we referred to the T1.4 Bayonet mount 35mm HS Primes, and the T1.3 Bayonet mount S16mm HS Primes as Mark I. On the west coast, Bayonet mount 35 HS primes are "B-Speeds" and the first of the "PL mount only, 170º rotation, no iris gear" second generation 35 HS primes are called "Mk. I".

Since then, mindful of the fighting in this thread, I have been paying keen attention to this seemingly meaningless detail, and sure enough, East Coast cine gear pros call the Bayonet mount HS primes Mk. I.

So I will, without any hesitation, refer to the rebuilt 35 HS T1.4 set I currently have for sale as Mk. I.

Your honor, members of the jury, I rest my case.

P.S. I am arranging to do a test with the set I have just rebuilt and a Mk.II set (equipped with Mk. III style focus scales that were not made by Carl Zeiss), that I serviced last year. The owner of the "Mk. 2.5" set has a RED ONE so I think the best test will be to actually shoot a simple scene with high contrast lighting, a lot of detail, and maybe a little flare into the lens.

The Mk. 2.5 set won't be available for two weeks (on rental), but that will give me time to plan the test. I welcome suggestions from anyone with ideas on testing methodology.

They are MKlls. Mk1s had a triangular iris. However the first set of MKlls only had a 170degress focus turn. The serial numbers were below 6,300,000 After about this number they had a full turn.

Thanks

Robin

Robin,

Where did you get this info? The Germans are usually very tight-lipped about this kind of stuff.

I have figured out that the first three numbers of a Zeiss serial number seem to be a production code. I always see the first three numbers in a group. The next four numbers seem to be a serial number for that production run.
