I've been regularly using a stock AIS version of the Nikon 50-300 f4.5 on Red since early 2008. The results have been exceptional. Mine breathes minimally and holds focus throughout a zoom. The f4.5 minimum aperture is fine for the genres I use the lens in - adventure travel, action sports, and wildlife. The lens has excellent contrast and is artifact free.

The AIS version of the lens, which is the lens on this thread, is IMO the most desirable of the Nikon 50-300 versions. It was first made in 1982 and the last one was made in 1999. Throughout that time period it was a staple kit lens for many top-level professional wildlife and sports photographers.

The lens is solidly built, glass is excellent, and it accepts 95mm screw-on filters. IMO its one of the better Nikon lenses every made - and I've been using Nikon lenses extensively since 1969.

Optex did very nice PL conversions on these lenses and others. IMO whoever buys this lens will be very happy with the results from it on Red One. Its one of my favorite lenses that I use on my Reds for the mobile hybrid EFP-style production I do. I eye focus the lens without a follow focus - easily controlling the zoom, iris, and focus of the lens by hand.

I've attached a couple of pics of my stock Nikon 50-300 f4.5 AIS in use on my Red cameras

Thanks for your notes. The lens breaths as all do but I've never had any issues with image quality, in fact when inspected on a lens projector the reticule projected produced well over 190 LP/mm (line pairs per millimeter) at T 5.6 through 11.5. As I recall the 'sweet spot' for this particular lens was around T 8.8. When one considers that lenses, including the very best primes, have a response limit of 200 LP/mm, 190 LP/mm for a 50/300 zoom is excellent. Suffice to say the ED version of the 50/300 has been recognized by many as a particularly well made lens and noted for exceptional optical performance. On the zip file in my original post I had a link on the history of the lens design. When shot at the optimized apertures mentioned above it is very crisp indeed. As it's a still photo lens I wouldn't recommend zooming in shot because it will exhibit slight zoom drift, I've treated it as a variable prime and I've been very happy with the results.

I received a PM about coverage; the lens will cover Super 35mm - I used it on a 3 perf Arri with no problems. As a full frame film still lens it should also cover the Vista Vision format; 8 perfs across, but I have yet to test it on that format. Format spec links below:

thanks Phil

Yes...the image quality is great. My field and bench test results would confirm the resolution LP/mm you posted. I consider the "sweet spot" of the lens to be around f8. My lens has no image shift at all when zoomed - thus I use it as an actual zoom lens on Red. Its true that some 35mm stills lenses do image shift when zoomed, and thus are better to be used as variable primes - but most 35mm still zoom lenses designed as parfocal (as opposed to varifocal) lenses hold focus remarkable well throughout a zoom. I can verify the lens covers 4k (and naturally 3k and 2k) on Red One, and since it is a full frame 35mm still lens I would also guess it will easily cover 5k on Epic.

Cinematographers who works in appropriate genres of production and aperture ranges should be very happy with your lens.

I would just like to second Steve and Phil's take on the Nikon 50-300. In fact it was Steve, in his usual generous fashion, who encouraged me to purchase one when I found one. I too have found it brilliant on the Red. Both the M and MX sensors seem to like it a lot. A very well built lens, and covers a lot of territory for its weight.

Phil rocks

Phil rocks

I bought this lens from Phil. You all should know that buying from Phil was a wonderful experience, consumate professionalism, communication, etc - and the lens, ah, the lens - it is in near new condition somehow, cared for like a child it appears, even with all the field use. I feel proud to own it!

Thanks Phil.

Thanks for the kind words Anson. Truth be told I'm a bit of a gear freak and treat my equipment with great care. The lens was a personal favorite, I'm very glad you're pleased with it and hope it serves you well. Best of luck to you.

Phil
