FOR SALE COOKE 18x100 T3 ZOOM

Tony! Good morning!

Off-topic, the Canon K35/Moviecam Lenses have been a treat. Not a bad deal either! I bet they have seen a few movies I know?

The Visual Products BNCR/RED adapter is a good fit but could I get these switched full time to PL? What do you think?

Billy

I am sorry as well! If you want to believe that I would sell a beat up cooke for excessive money then thats your perogative. The comments I make upon lenses are from many years of experience with cameras, lenses, grip, the whole shebang. Red has brought many new things to the biz that I applaud. For example it has reformed and is changing the budget movie that was previously shot on a cheap Sony. Nothing about content but quality images is where I come from. IF you want to bury your head in the sand and believe all you read then thats fine by me. However; You are correct before the 18 to 85 their was nothing. Look at PV they have been remounting beautifully other manufacturers lenses for years and in some cases improvng them. However, we do know what they started out as. Glass does not just happen its an expensive business and at the retail price RED 18 to 85 is sold at something has to be interesting.
I repeat.....Testing must be done in as near lab conditions as possible with all the Questions answerable. If you want to read about test conditions go look at CML or ASC or BSC logs. I love sharp pictures; what the DoP does afterwards is art. Nuff said!!
Thanks to those who did understand where I was coming from. Finally I will have more kit for sale in the future at fair prices and no gimmicks.

Tony, I think you make some valid points. There's nothing better for a camera than good glass. It often makes a world of difference. Cooke, Zeiss, etc. have been making quality glass for a long time and it's hard to argue about the craftsmanship that goes into them. Of course, it comes with a price. I believe what Red is trying to do is aim for that kind of quality but do it at a price point that suits their product line. There may be some compromises that have to be made to hit that price point, but they can still end up with solid lenses. It's up to the shooter whether the glass is a match for their tastes. The 18-85 and the 300 seem to be pretty well received at this point and this to me is a good sign that Red is dedicated to providing quality lenses. A test lab is not the only place a lens should be evaluated. It should also be evaluated with one's own eyes in real world shooting conditions because at the end of the day, sometimes that's what matters most. I've been fooled by specs so many times in the past with various gear. I would buy because of name brand recognition and then realize that a cheaper, less know brand actually worked better for my application. Most of the time this isn't the case. I would never say a Cooke or a Zeiss are not worth the money. They often are. But if the Red zoom fulfilled my needs and I like the images I get using it, then what else is there to ask for?

Again, I think your general point of the Cooke being a quality lens and worth the money is valid. The only point I would disagree on is saying the Red lens has to be a rehoused still lens. I can't say it's not because I don't have any knowledge of who makes it, but until proven that it is a still lens, I have to go with what is known - that it's a pretty darn good lens.

Dear Steve,
I agree with everything you say.:construction: I am however very interested in where the RED 18 to 85 is born. To make any lens from scratch is extremely expensive. And most "Cinematographic" manufacturers are known and also the Japanese re manufacturing companies. Therefore it has to be remade or re housed and that is interesting.
Maybe its something that is known already [15x6/7 ] but has been remade with limits put upon its range. Whatever the lens is, it will surely eventually come out and we all will be as usual amazed.
I agree with your statement that its in the eye of the user. What annoys me is attending a RED owners showcase evening and seeing a 30 minute programme of images, and at the end in a question and answer session the presenter cannot say what was what, and did not even know how the shots were made where the lenses came from the conditions, collimation etc. etc.
This sadly does nothing for RED or old cynics like me who have seen tests for years and years. I hope that now in the UK that we have a RED company and facility opening that this will change. They have certainly hired the right man for the job in Alan Piper.
Thanks for your kind words which I hope will allay others who will understand where I was coming from.
It was not about my lens but ANY lens. Finally as I have said before Red is a welcome revolution for our business.
Regards to all. Tony Covell.:innocent:

Hi Billy, I am pleased you enjoyed the K35 lenses that DHL eventually delivered.
A set like that was used on Aliens 2 second unit. which I supplied all the kit for. I can't say it was that set as I did not keep the records. However; I would not rehouse them as the price will be at least $4k per lens and their loss for 6months. Rent them to "those who know" !! Its a great image.:bye2:
Kind regards
Tony Covell.

Hi Matthew,
They probably can, but you know design and glass and you know grinding, polishing and blooming. Then you do this for a retail price of $9,999.00 with what mark up?
If this is true; and I dont know any different bcos I can read what Red says like you and everybody else; WHY are other known quality lenses 3x more expensive?
Maybe after so many years I am cynical or just plain interested.
I thought Steve Sherricks discussion piece was very illuminating.
Kindest. Tony Covell.:detective2:

WHY are other known quality lenses 3x more expensive?

Kindest. Tony Covell.:detective2:

because they sell 3x times less lenses?

A New VW Golf 6 costs the same as 1 Masterprime...
which of these 2 items have more R&D and technical stuff.
its the selling of 3 to 5 times bigger amounts that allows red to produce the lens for less then 10k.

but to keep the analogy...a VW is not a Ferrari

Also Red has the benefit of multiple OEMs that can produce top quality using robotics and other cost saving technologies. Angenioux, Cooke and Zeiss cinema lenses are still pretty much hand made in countries with very skilled and highly paid technicians. Labor is always the number one cost in these instances.
