  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

For everyone who went to Cine-gear what did you think of Hateful 8 70mm vs 8k Weapon?

Hey everyone,

For those who saw both, I'm curious to hear your thoughts about the 70mm projection vs the 8k playback?

Firstly, I thought they both looked absolutely stunning. I thought the colors of the 70mm projection were richer than the colors of the 8k footage, but I thought the 8k footage had a fantastically clean look to it. I'm not an expert, but I'm guessing the color difference is because the 8k footage was restricted to a digital color space where the 70mm footage was not? I do not know what color space they were playing back the 8k footage in, but I'm now kicking myself for not asking. Does anyone know?

What made me really happy was the fact that there was an obvious aesthetic difference for each form of capture and projection. One was not objectively better than the other, just different. Horses for Courses.

P.S. Luckily, I also got the chance to see the faults of both systems as well. During the 70mm test footage, I noticed the gate weave and found it incredibly distracting, especially on the shots with mountain snow in the center of frame. During my second viewing of the 8k footage, the Pablo stuttered playback, and then crashed. Always nice to be reminded that even the giants of our industry aren't perfect 100% of the time :).

I noted the same issues, Marcus. It's true that 35mm and even 70mm will always have some degree of jitter and weave, just due to the mechanics of the gate. But the quality of the color is beyond reproach.

I bet a quite a few A-list cinematographers will opt for Alexa 65 in the coming year as a compromise, going for something better than 4K but not as expensive as 65mm film.

I thought a good demo of color was the Sony SDR vs. HDR demo where the SDR was 709 and the HDR was 2020. The Sony BVM is only capable of producing 80% of 2020, so it was much closer to P3. It was also in a light controlled room, albeit smoldering hot by the end of the day. The people looked the same on in the comparison, which is a good thing, but the sunset and lights on the carnival ride really stood out on the HDR/2020 side.

The 8k demo had a big light, from a neighboring booth, washing out the screen and producing some nasty reflections. I suspect the display is probably closer to 709 in terms of gamut. The content was not really colorful either. I did not see the 70mm projection, which is too bad. I assume it was different footage.
