  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I was wondering if anyone who has an MX upgraded Red could shoot some low light tests at various iso levels using the 2K crop mode. This will give those waiting on the 2/3 a good idea of what to expect in terms of dof and low light potential.

I am confused about what you are saying. Are you talking about downressing 4k footage to 2k or about cropping the entire image (taking the 2k area out of the middle of the 4k image)? How would this replicate the sensor capabilities of the 2/3 sensor. It would have all of the characteristics of of the 4k image but just be cropped. I am asking for someone to shoot MX low light in 2k mode, in the camera. This will give us a close approximation of what the 2/3 is capable of. The 2/3 will have greatly increased dof and decreased low light abilities (assumption) and this can not be mimicked by cropping 4k footage into 2k.

if i'm not mistaken, all that really happens on the RED One in the 2k mode is a crop on the sensor, so it will be a bit different than the 2/3 sensor.

Yes, but it will be close enough to give us an idea until we get actual 2/3 footage. The size of the 2k sensor crop is close in size to the 2/3 sensor. Since the new MX tech will make it into the new sensor, a 2k low light test with Red should give Scarlet users a rough estimate on what to expect from their sensor.

the photosites on the sensor are completely different. On the One lighting will be exactly the same, you will just see exactly what you expect to see... 2k resolution cropped, which isn't even the most we will get from the 2/3 sensor. you do realize you can do 3k on the RED One? even still all that's going to give you is the aspect ratio, and you don't need to shoot the One to figure out what that's going to look like. basically, it's not going to give us any more approximation than what we're already seeing on the RED One's at 4k or 4.5k. it's given that the resolution will be lower, we don't need a test to see how that will differ - what we don't know is specific low-light or dof differences (though for dof we have a pretty good idea, it just comes down to the glass), but we can imagine pretty easily... you can't test that on the current cameras because they do use a different sensor, and it will have different characteristics. me, i'm not concerned about it's performance in either area.

The texture of the noise at 2k will be more like what we would see on the 2/3" sensor.

I'd actually like to see some 2K MX footage too. From what I've heard on the Red is that the noise is chunkier in 2K, so I'm curious to see how it looks on the new sensor.

I'll be doing some 2k 120fps stuff downtown LA this Friday night. I'll throw a clip up for you guys this weekend

Thank you.

This vid shows a little of the low light characteristics with the MX sensor in 2K, there is a noticeable drop in sensitivity between the regular and slow motion shots but overall, this should give us a pretty good idea about what to expect from the 2/3 sensor.
