  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Footage Distortion from Scarlet-X

Could there be some other component that is damaging your "brain"? The odds of having 5 RMAs by chance has got to be pretty slim.

That's what I thought but the first RMA (similar to this) happened right out of the box. Since then, I've gotten 2 more cameras and this is with a new power supply from RED.

The random little coloured pixels and 'sparks' across the black image are nothing to worry about - its cosmic radiation interacting with the sensor and its not exclusive to RED by any means. You'll see them most easily if you run slow frame rates and long shutter with high ISO. The cleaner the sensor gets the more you get to see these - they're more noticeable on our Monochrome with its clean ISO 2000 and lack of debayer. How frequently do they occur? They're about one every ten seconds for me.

All your other problems I can't speak for...

I love linking to this thread, it's a great way to steer producers away from red cameras!

Five repair/replacements? Mains power or battery? Except for something like a resistively shorting or intermittently open connecting lead, I am wondering if something environmental might be at play at one of the locations you frequently operate or test your camera at, maybe the location where you prepare the camera before taking it out. Do you have a large electrical utility substation or power transformer nearby? Is there a very powerful radio transmitter or microwave tower nearby? Is there a paging transmitter nearby? Is there a military base nearby with powerful radar transmitters? Is there a large industrial plant nearby which might be sending something back down the powerline? Do you have one of the modern computerised cellphones on you or nearby most times you prep the camera. I understand that there might be control signals sent on power lines or this might be a myth in today's world of internet and computers. Way out of left field - Is there a chance that a virus has been written to a SSD drive whilst connected to a PC, is attempting to move across to the camera's computer unsuccessfully but tying up resources as it tries to do so? - That last mad notion might be one for the RED techs to investigate. Please do not heed my comments beyond perhaps hinting at other directions of investigation.

I have seen this same issue on both my Scarlet and Epic... BUT

For me the simple workaround has been retransferring the problem file from the card a second and sometimes even a third time. I could not replicate the problem on monitor playback, but once transferred, that is where I would find the issue. I would keep transferring that one file until the problem was resolved....

I do not know what changed in regards to RCX, but back in the day (ver 15ish) I could transcode the file even with the problem frames... But now RCX 20+ will not let you transcode through the issues. I would love to see the current version of RCX be able to push through the file errors, so you could at least edit with the offline file temporarily.

Oh no... the nightmare continues... on the RED Epic Dragon now... FML
