  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Footage Distortion from Scarlet-X

Guys, just send Nick your r3d snapshots and your log files.

I had a loaner camera and a new ssd shipped to me within hours of getting contact with Nick and the RMA department. In fact I'll have the camera tomorrow!

In short, RED service is incredible and exactly what you'd expect from any reputable professional product company.

My experience was different. Took them a week and a half to tell me I needed a firmware upgrade. Once Nick got involved though, it was less than 12 hours for the solution (I hope, still have to test some more). Have to rent for a few gigs in the meantime because I don't trust my camera. Don't want to risk looking like an ass in front of the client again, that was brutal.

My experience was much the same. But I do have to admit I was impressed with Red service, just not the outcome of a firmware upgrade. I too am in the same position that I do not trust my camera after having the corrupt frames on a big TV commerical shoot. My professional reputation is on the line every time I shoot so why would I trust a camera that has had an issue. I have been testing but can not say 100% that my camera is rock solid.

Okay, so it sounds like RED are listening are doing well, good to hear. My camera is playing up (same problems) so it sounds like I'll have to send it in....how long did it take before they fixed it?

Firmware fix still working for me after filming all weekend. Not fully convinced yet but getting there. Thanks again Nick.

Well, first shoot with the newest RELEASE firmware (3.3.14) and it's back. There goes my Movember video, god damn it RED!

I might have an idea, but I'm not a RED owner. How about switching aspect ratios and/or resolutions and/or framerates and shooting a bit in each before returning to the desired setting? In some cases, this solves problems. I don't know why, but it does. And make sure to blackshade for an appropriate length of time - with a hot camera. EDIT: I repeat, blackshade with a hot camera, which means well above 'operating temperature' but below the shut-down threshold.

From my experience with my Scarlet, it was a hardware fault. The screen garbs posted here are identical to what I had (even the right hand side bias). Sent camera off to RED (From Australia) and they put it through the ringer, found a hardware fault, fixed it and sent it back. I've been testing it for a few days now and all seems perfect :) It sucks that this happens to RED owners....and sucks even more when you lose clients because of it, but to give RED credit, they were very helpful and got the job done - camera fixed and all is well :) I'm holding my faith in this company....and believe that I will be looked after and valued as a customer. It's working out so far! Try not to get too upset....I know that's hard, but these things happen. Send it back and be nice, they'll sort you out I'm sure.

For anyone who's been following this thread, the issue finally presented itself when using the camera with the Red supplied power supply. I'm getting the sucker RMA'd (for the second time now) and hopefully this will get resolved once and for all. The camera performance has sucked but Red customer service has been pretty outstanding during the whole process. Crossing my fingers...

Wow, using the power supply while recording created those crazy artifacts???

Wow, just got my camera back from its second RMA. Tested it by taking one shot and BAM...

EDITED (because I was pissed when I originally wrote this): Issue was caused with battery power (full battery) and i HAVEN'T been able to replicate with the power adapter yet. Maybe it's a battery/v-mount issue? But then again, last time this started with battery then it finally happened with the power adapter.

Please, all I want is a replacement or my money back at this point. I can't keep doing this.

That really sucks. I really don't know what to say. I've had absolutely zero issues with mine (I know you don't want to hear that). I would hope at this point RED gives you a new camera. At the very least a loaner until this is sorted out.

What the f*ck man? I now have to send it in a third time? God f*cking damn it RED, this pisses me off. I've tried to be patient but I think i'm at the point where I take my story on the road because it seems patience doesn't count for anything. I'm sure if I was someone of higher stature, this issue would have been dealt with the first time the camera went back.

For anyone interested in my trials and tribulations thus far. I was able to replicate the issue using the RED power supply/adapter so this should rule out the problem being from the battery or switronix plate. Man, was this ever a long day of testing. I wish I got compensated by RED for doing their quality control testing on a holiday. A holiday well spent I suppose (only if the 3rd RMA resolves the issue). The only problem is there was no log file generated, hahaha.

Not sure if it's related but I've been finding a lot of these red/blue pixels popping up in a lot of frames...

I'm officially changing the name of #02055 from 'Apollo' to 'Lemon'.

RED decided to replace the camera after my 3rd RMA, #03001, yay! But wait, got the new camera today and did some testing after a black calibration...

Ahhhh! And that's with red power supply. Hahahaha. I've sent them the log (at least this camera generates logs!) and I'll try a different SSD card (you never know). Could be the power supply too (so I'll test with battery power) but this issue on the previous camera happened with both power adapter and battery.

As upset as this makes me, I have to give props to the RMA department for working their butts off to try and fix the problem. I think I'm just cursed or something.

I'm going to grab myself a beer, watch some hockey, and confirm my "backup" rental for tomorrow's gig.

I've come to the conclusion that #02055 and #03001 are dirty hillbilly cousins.

I need help (or just general feedback). I tested with a different SSD card and got the following distortions. Now am I overreacting? Since this issue has been plaguing me over the last year, I'm worried that I might be going crazy. Is it normal for digital video cameras like the RED Scarlet to have these minor distortions? Looks like a 4th RMA now but I'm just so skeptical since the odds of getting two messed up cameras must be so low.

RMA #5?

I can't format media and it won't let me upgrade the firmware. Happens when hooked up to either the RED power adapter or battery. All I can say is wow. Too bad too, it happened right in the middle of a 48 hour film race.

You have some seriously bad karma. Stay away from me and everyone else :P
