This by no means scientific and I'm not a 25 year camera veteran or anything like that. But I do know how to decently light and use a tape measure. So here are some tests that I did with some focus charts that I bought yesterday at the Filmtools Red demo. These charts were done at a distance of 3 feet and the backfocus had just been set. The lens was at 50mm. I changed the light intensity so they looked some what the same for the first three of every chart. But after f~5.6 the light didn't get any brighter and that's why the others look a little dark. These are also straight from Redcine with no adjustments. I'm not trying to show that the Red lens is anything but amazing. But just like most pieces of glass that I've gottin my hands on they have a sweet spot as far as the f-stop and sharpness goes. All the TIFFs are 54MB FYI.

andrew! did you see me inside filmtools at the counter right when you bought this?

I was at the filmtools RED thing taking photos on my 40D I was wearing a dark blue REI jacket.

I have huge respect for you timelapse work, we have emailed back and forth several times...

these charts look great.

I might have seen you Mike. But I'm not too sure. That Red event was kind of cool to meet people there that were interested in the Red camera. Also I noticed that some people were talking about stuff they didn't completely understand, which kind of hurts peoples' view on the Red. I tried to pass on info that I picked up on Red Day to help out and get people informed. Glad you like the timelapse stuff. I want to do some with the Red at night but I need to wait for that side of the camera to get worked out.

Your right Miltos, 5.6 is really sharp. But if you have no light 2.8 can save your ass. Just make sure your focus is as close as it can be. Or just rent a faster lens like a f~1.4 or something like that. But those might have the same problem wide open. I haven't gotten a chance to play with the Arri or Cooke lenses yet so I really can't say.

BTW people that Century Optics chart was $25 with tax and I really like it. It has a chart on the front and back. That spoke design works really well for finding focus. Its usually what is used for when productions make their frame & focus leaders. At least that's what I've seen.
