  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Focal Plane

So, who is correct, Brent who says there is "no program to retrofit existing cameras", or Jarred who says "It's pretty easy"?

your talking about two different things. The focus hook is something we have had since day one, and works on all cameras since #1. The witness mark, is now being engraved into the body, and that is starting with the next batch.

So 1108 should have it then, right?

I had an assist measuring from the focus hook yesterday on a music video. We shot a lot in a fairly cool room. The camera warmed up and the focus shifted out by half a foot. When the camera cooled down again it settled back to the focus hook plane again.

Holy Shit thats huge Dale. Can some others do some focus charts with cold and warm cameras to see if this is an isolated case. There are a lot of high level professionals that have been using very precise fast cookes, master primes... so I would think this would have been noticed if it is a trait of the camera.

Talk about an argument for 1:1 focus magnification. This sounds kinda bizarre though - would like to see it replicated.

That's not good at all.
Will try to replicate this behaviour.

Hey Dale:

What lens were you using?

CF or Red Raid Drives?

This would make absolutely no difference.

Maybe not, but sometimes the more information one has, the easier to reach that AHA!:excl: moment.

Oh I get it. Let me give it a try.

Dale were you wearing jeans or slacks when this happened?

That should give us a big AHA moment.

Back on topic I have PM'd a bunch of owners that have had cameras for quite a while now and that have had some very sharp very accurate lenses on their cameras in cold outside to warm inside conditions on the same day and have not had this problem ever. One of the owners has had a camera from the first batch in his rental house and although he has never had this problem he mentioned to me that Dale "has some serious chops in this business and is a pro with many years of experience" so I would assume user error would be next to nil on this so it may just be an isolated case with his camera.

Sorry if I have offended.

There! See? Problem solved. Guess my post did provide an AHA! moment!

No offence buddy. So are you wearing jeans or slacks?

Actually I had a duplicate uniform made to the one that your avitar is wearing. Very comfy.

ha Finner. They were sort of skinny jeans. Too tight maybe?

Okay. I got a great response back from Red about the BF breathing. Their response is that the PL mount can't have been tightened up and I think that sounds quite likely to me. The other cameras I've been shooting with have had no problems and I've asked around and no one else has had this issue with a range of temperatures.

So. Tips for new playas: set your flange focus distance carefully then make sure that PL mount lock is good and tight.

Thanks also to Red for the quick response and Finner you're hardly one to comment on pants! :)

Isn't it quite danger to hook something to camera and walk over all that mess in set to take measures? And what is 2.8mm unless you are not shooting growing flower? Which actor is able to stay in exact distance within range of 2.8mm?

Hey gnomer,

I hear you, How many times put on hand shoes only to burn penis anytime in flax beating machine? Actors many often being sometimes ugly from bottom angle.

I sometimes making commercial for cinema town have big levy against corn industry.
