flying RED

This might be a rather random post, but I just want to get some feedback from you all RED frequent flyer.

I transport my Scarlet, and all of its kits from power to rig, in a Pelican 1600 and all of my glass in a 1510 on ground. I fly at least twice a month for shoot, and when ever I do, I usually pull the brain and mags from my 1600 and fly it in a separate carry on along with my 1510 in the over head, while checking the bigger case, slider, and my tripod at the desk.

I never trust to send any of my camera down the TSA conveyor belt for two obvious reason: 1) lack of care during handling 2) potential thievery.

Yes, everything are insure, but still.

So, just wondering how you guys usually fly with your own RED, or other camera, for production and the trip back home?

I always carry: brain, mags, screen, 2 volts, 1 charger, 24-105 canon. All fits in a normal backpack. So if my shit gets lost I can at least do something.

Always array the camera, and enough "stuff" to be able to shoot when I arrive on location. Just in case.
always a chance fr luggage to get lost or even stolen.

I take my lenses, brain, cards, LCD, Redmote and cables on board in a 1510 and a messenger bag, the rest is in a 1660 in the hold (clutch, batteries, chargers, matte box, follow focus, etc. If I'm going somewhere I can't replace lost / stolen items quickly I'll take an essential kit on as hand carry.

Believe it or not, in my carry on, I have 3 Scarlet bodies, my 11-16 conversion, 17-50 and the big 18-85!
then a ton of cases checked in with all the rest of the stuff, but boy, what a work out to put that bag on the overhead bin...

Slightly off-topic, but what insurances are you guys using? I looked at a few camera insurance back at home (Berlin) and most of them excluded checked luggage. Flying with a tripod later this year that I obviously can't carry on, so I'm looking for some advice there.

I too always try to get enough gears for carry so it can at least power up at minimal configuration once arrive in case if lost/stolen bags. Sadly my 1510 is occupied by a full set of primes, so it took up all of the real estate for other items... and I also fly with a mac mini and RAID drive for DIT in my carry on, so I am always at Tetris Lv 15 when I pack my carry on (and checked bag).

I love my Pelican, but anything bigger than a 1620 really sucks on weight. Every trip my main suit case (is always at 49.5lb if not 50lb when I fly). Until my production are paying for these things, I always have to limit my flying resource most of the time.

I heard that TSA is also loosening things that you can get through security, so we might be able to gate check our sticks with those baby stroller...? I did that in the past with a small fluid head tripod way back, wish I can do that again.

I use an under writer policy through an independent agency to cover my gears. They claimed that it covers thievery and damage, but didn't single out checked bag; so you raised a good red flag that I should check, Paul.
