  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Fly by wire" zoom availability as non-fixed ?

Something difficult about explaining oneself in these forums is the vast differences in the nature of the work each of us gets to do. I do documentaries, generally in a 3 man crew enviroment.

If the 8x will not be available on its own, I will be forced to get the 2/3rd system with the mini primes, and wait until Red delivers the detachable 8x Fly by Wire. Pity because for my documentary work I need the primes for interviews/relaxed situations and the Fly by Wire Zoom for ENG work.

The solution is simple. Buy two brains. It's what I and many others plan to do.

Buy the 2/3 fixed scarlet for its high frame rate and ease of shooting in certain situations where you'd want a zoom or don't want to swap lenses.

Then also buy one of the others for the ability to change lenses and/or shoot with higher resolution: 2/3, S35, FF35.

Swap modules as needed, etc...

Even if they were manual lenses like the Pro Primes and (I assume?) the MiniPrimes, a MiniZoom or two would be a great addition to the option list for 2/3" Scarlet.

Off topic though, that makes me wonder : why mix and match (manual 2/3" and S35 lenses but AF FF35 lenses)? Why not all one or the other?

To lay my cards on the table. I plan to get the Scarlet S35, a "normal" red pro prime (perhaps 35mm although this may be slightly telephoto) and a Scarlet 2/3" fixed. Depending on cash flows and my whims I may instead buy the 2/3" fixed first and then go for the FF35 Scarlet with a 50mm lens. I'm shooting for TV so I'd crop it to 16/9 anyway and would also like to use it for some stills photojournalism work.

Scarlet 2/3" fixed has some very specific advantages as a rugged "bullet proof" B cam. Or if you like, a better than the current best 2/3" A cam (although that will depend on the quality of the glass).

I think somebody at the Red crew needs to make registering to the forums different. Like all new users would have to read most of the general facts about RED ONE and the coming Scarlet and Epic facts, because it's silly how after every 2 days there's a new thread about how the 2/3" should actually be s35 and the fixed 8x lens available for all the other brains also. I just find it interesting how people find it easier to sign up to a forum and ask a question instead of looking at red.com and recon and having all the info they need WITHOUT somebody retelling it to them.

Making people spend countless hours searching through old forums to gather all the information that you have before they're able to post? sounds fair...

I think people keep asking about possible availability to the 8x lens from the fixed because Jim has never given a straight forward answer about it (And I'm pretty sure he's never even mentioned it on Recon, correct me if I'm wrong). The closest thing I've found to an answer was "Fixed means Fixed" Which doesn't say whether they plan to make a separate zoom for the 2/3 cinema; fly by wire or not.
I guess they may just not have an answer to the question yet, but I wish Jim would let us know what he's thinking about on the subject instead of giving an "avoiding the topic" answer. (or at least that's how it sounded from the way I looked at it)

Exactly, we are just pushing for an answer on the "fly by wire" detachable 8x zoom....we want it badly!

There is an answer... not possible in the near future. Part of why this all works IS the integration.

Nevermind, Jarred, Jannard, red on red lettering makes it hard to read for some of us. Thought I was talking to somebody else before.

Making rigs to do many things is relatively cheap (ego's aside and premium quality materials and construction, largely unneeded, depending on level). Over at dvinfo, and other places on the web, there is a large history of making rigs to get standard detachable lens to do extra things (as long as you don't have to interface through complex standards and use expensive components). So obviously it probably wont work in with any existing cinema camera network system, but then it does not have to for small productions. I had envisioned a new way to retrofit drive the lens mechanics and still maintain the manual control with good feel. I had done some significant ergonomic study into new ways to electronically manually control cameras steadily for my own camera designs, as I mentioned before (maybe I still will do a camera one day if I finish my CE processing platform and can access good sensor options priced for the market level I am looking at).

I am sorry if we have been cutting across Red intent, but I see the value for certain shooting of auto assist and wired lens control on detachable lens, and agree with others that expressed that here and prefer to buy one set of lens and good sensor than many. As it is, I will probably have to resort to buying the basic for now.

The 8x fixed lens was designed from the start to be an integrated fixed lens, This gives us incredible optical quality while maintaining the smallest external footprint. it will not work as a removable lens. It will not work as a removable lens. It will not work as a removable lens.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but its not like we are just bolting a lens to the front of the camera and attaching a few cables.

Jarred, any chance we can get a peek, i mean, pic, of the 25mm MRP used to shoot Lucky with? Even if it was an "alpha' version? Or do we have to wait till Jim leaves?

(Hope the leg is better. That thing just looked filthy mcnasteeee!)

FERRARI F151 HISTORY

I know that everything is a moving target, but perhaps maintaining (i.e. writing and then updating) a more detailed FAQ for the Scarlet might do the trick. It's not so easy to find information unless you have been following these threads since November or so.

Somehow I'm getting a notion it won't work as a removable lens...

Okay then...I'd like to propose a making of 2/3" "fly by wire" zoom, designed to be removable, with slightly less priority to size.

Mini Zoom in the near future ...

How about a fully manual Mini Zoom ? something like 40-100mm for the extreme sports community. Maybe ? in the near future ? am I the only one here ?

Why wouldn't you just use a regular FF35 lenses from Nikon or Canon, or a PL mount lens? With the crop factor, a 28-105mm 35mm lens would reach nearly 100-380mm equivalent in 2/3rd. It seems like the real thing a lot of people want is a wide zoom that fits 2/3rd mount for Scarlet (e.g. 6-50mm). And hope it doesn't cost an absolute fortune :-).

IMHO, Telephoto is relatively easy and widely available, wide is a whole different story. You can't pick up a 8-50 from Nikon for $500, but can easily get a standard zoom for that price. I choose wide over anything else, period.
