I'm interested in having more lens options with 2/3" Scarlet. Will current 8x zoom be available separately for 2/3" Scarlet brain ?
I hope "fly by wire" in not reserved only for fixed lens.

The 8x fixed is just that... fixed to the camera.

Jim, this may be a dumb/too early to tell question, but assuming all is on spec and schedule with the Scarlet program, would the RED team ever consider making a zoom lens for the 2/3" interchangeable? Is this even financially feasible? If it can be done with the right balance of RED quality and RED prices, I think it would be one of those 'never leave home w/o it' bits of kit.

This would be great for me. Some of my work is ENG/Documentary, guerrilla style, where a zoom with automatic features is greatly needed. Other times I get to work in more relaxed situations where the mini primes would be just wonderful....Please make detachable zoom 8x !!!!

Would be nice to have adapters for different kind of lenses. I think that Red could make an advantage of their on lenses by doing these adapters.

Still, I think they were interested in a interchangeable lens with fly by wire assist.

At Scarlet prices, just buy the fixed lens as a spare with fly-by-wire and get the detachable as your art body.

Don't ask Jim to put every feature into one camera, it doesn't add up technically and isn't fair.

Including fly by wire as standard on all lens is a minimal cost in the grand scheme of things, and helps people in some filming situations (we are talking about target audience) and even as an SLR some auto features help at times. I am more interested in tri-purpose myself, video, film and SLR, video and SLR happening at the drop of a hat. So the s35 format with auto features would be a good compromise. 2/3rd is a little small for me, and smaller than 16mm.

Hey Wayne that is great news... can you build them for us then?

That statement could not be further from the truth.

even though the 2/3 might be smaller then 16mm doesn't mean to say that it isn't sufficient enough to do the same tasks such as the S35, minor differences in terms of the resolution and the frame rates, but really the 2/3 scarlet is still remarkable, it can be put to film, it can still be sufficient enough for stills photography, unless your looking for big prints...then maybe not...

although this is my opinion...
given i don't see the desire for auto options either...though the 2/3 scarlet fixed is a stepping stone for those that want to get their feet wet with film making at a profesional level... :sifone:

You guys realize there is a 2/3" Scarlet with no fixed lens, right? This is what all of you seem to be describing...

In which case you are stuck with which servo zoom options ?

If it comes down to the choice of putting >$20000 2/3" zoom on a $2500 camera, or getting $ 6000 XDCAM EX, for the fast turnaround non-cinematic stuff... the choice will come down to "lovable" mpeg2.

I'll get Scarlet(s) anyway, and zoom will be made anyway - as fixed only.
The question is pretty logical and not unreasonable.

Don't ask Jim to put every feature into one camera,

I'm not.

it doesn't add up technically and isn't fair.

If it doesn't add up it doesn't add up. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Please don't accuse me of not being fair.

Something difficult about explaining oneself in these forums is the vast differences in the nature of the work each of us gets to do. I do documentaries, generally in a 3 man crew enviroment.

If the 8x will not be available on its own, I will be forced to get the 2/3rd system with the mini primes, and wait until Red delivers the detachable 8x Fly by Wire. Pity because for my documentary work I need the primes for interviews/relaxed situations and the Fly by Wire Zoom for ENG work.

Exactly.

For different types fo work, different lens systems are desirable, as seblein and others mention, but can be combined in one lens (but not in all circumstances desirably). I have seen 2/3rd used, and still believe s35 (like four thirds format) is a good compromise if you are going to swing between professional sue photographs video and film. But we have really debating too many concepts going back and forwards here to do them justice ;) .

Hmm, things are getting confused, as I just said above. What I am meaning by fly by wire, is not so much wired manual control through signalling (maybe a IO module or inbuilt radio link) and not pan tilt remote heads, but the ability to have metering, focus etc (plus zoom/framing assist) in the system where the camera drives the lens (which can also allow controls on the body), as well as manual controls on the lens, that don't get in the way of each other, which is the best of both worlds. The same sort of features that many cheap (relative to film industry costs) Asian cameras carry, which is the truth. Sure they don't necessarily have to be the highest quality for doco/responsive shots, but the patented/more latest techniques could be offered at extra costs as well. As we know, a fair bit can be done via image analysis as well (but then the patent issue comes in) that can be upgraded through firmware. Sure enough, in the film industry any feature might be another $10K, our friends overseas show us otherwise.

Thanks Jim, anyway, I still await your next step in the revolution :) .

Does this mean the FF35 lenses won't have fly-by-wire focus?

If you need a detachable zoom, why wait for a Red-branded one? There are -- or at least were -- plenty of used 16-mm zooms on the market. The 2/3-inch Scarlet Cinema brain will, according to Red's schedule, be released before the fixed. I presume the mini-primes will be released at the same time as the Cinema brain. If Red releases a detachable version of the 8x zoom, I expect it won't be until after the fixed Scarlet is out. That may, therefore, be several months after the Cinema is available. If you need a zoom, I wouldn't wait for Red to release one. Buy or rent one until then.

Now behave ;)

So I take it I have permission to manufacture after market units for your lens at a fraction of the cost :) .
