  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Floating dust particles

Ii my youth I was a Bread Master for one year then a PizzaChef for seven, I never got sick from Flour, so I say that flour is a safe thing to use, is food after all, isn't it?
Ciao Rossi, well not everything u can eat is thereby not toxic in any pre- or post-cooking state . As for the dust or flour it all depends what kind of flour u take and as a pizzaiolo you're not constantly breathing flour all the time. But even dust can make people sick!

One of the best effects I have created wads to get some regular dust, (very fine one) mixed in 1/3s with Flower and Powered sugar, it works just fantastic and gives you a unique volume of Dust Particles in the air, color shifting from white to gray (dirty look) can be achieved by different means, including powered color, or just simply mixing the dust in 1/2s, the size of ventilators used to move the dust will also make a big difference and so will the speed, you might also want to use a bounce card as to give some strong strokes in to the dust moved regularly by the fan, as this will create spirals, if come to need them.

ciao

I might actually try this.

I couldn't use this effect on the short, unfortunately I had to focus attention on other issues and didn't put enough effort to prep for this effect.

The dust would have to be in a scene where the actress was painting in her room and the camera was a handy cam the actor himself was holding, so almost the whole room was framed.

I had to have something like a boomed sieve shaken by an assistant to make the particles fall at the right time.

In order to enhance the effect I had a 2K tungsten fresnel (most powerful/beamy light that I could power on a household) out of the window to backlight the particles, that I kept it there even not being able to use the dust effect.

Thank you all for the tips!

Until next time...

I once used some Fuller's Earth to get that effect... trouble is that any floating particulate matter is not particularly good to breathe. Fuller's Earth is now banned on film sets; ground-up walnut shells are apparently the new thing to use for dust...

Filmtools is selling Pyrolite as a Fuller's Earth substitute, any experience with that?
