Hello,

I'm getting a lot of flair with the Dragon, more that I've been used to with the Epic-Mysterium X as the Port Bushing was installed on the X.
I'm shooting a lot without mattebox with full frame lenses on the Nikon AL mount. I know I could deminish the flair with some matte but the way I shoot don't alow me to use a matte box only some sunshades.

See this and this video.

The Dragon optical path has a lot of strange sufaces wich are prone to reflection.
I was wondering if some Port Bushing was on the work. I also hope the OLPF module will adress those reflections.

Any input for immediate use are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Pat

Ummm strange i see many in Nikon lens 35mm dx and 50mm , not in Canon FF and nothing in sigma 18-35.
I could not do anything on set.
In the end I changed the lens.
But it seems to me that others have had this on reduser.

Hello Luigi,

Could you make a photo of the Dragon gate with PL mount?

Pat

Patrick, most if not all your trouble is the Nikon mount. The rearmost surface (third step form bottom in your image) is the culprit IMHO and responds well to have flocked paper, matt paint or similar applied.

And FYI - the PL on dragon looks like this:

thanks John, I supposed that it was the Nikon mount. That's why all well with the canon and pl.
Good to know.

What this man said.

Thanks John for your input,

Have you any link to some flocked paper / matt paint that could make it? I'll be looking to customize the camera, mine is so customized, you barely recognise it's an Epic ;-)

Pat

Here some flocking tests for the Nikon mount.

The tissue was only put on the lower side of the mount (top remained with the paper), for the paper test it was put on top and bottom.

Patrick,

I think I recently read that this has been reported by another user and it is being looked into by RED. Similar to the epic gate flair, I would guess that RED will probably provide a factory solution that is user installable. The tape and tissue tests work well.

I had my Leica lens guy apply a coat of matte black (the appropriate kind for a gate or lens parts) and it's solved it quite well.

I noticed your test also solves the "box flair" that has been talked about as well.

If you prefer to use flock, then maybe try to get you hands on some telescope flock, remove the mount to install it. Telescope flock uses adhesive so perhaps it's not the best long term solution. Flock can also tend to collect dust.

Thanks David for your input.

I think I'll have to get hold on those special paint. Coming from a film back ground, having some tissue dust on the gate makes me shiver ;-).
BTW I've never looked so many times to a digital "gate" as this afternoon!

Do you have any adress where I can find those matte black coat?

Thanks

Pat

I don't know where to get the suitable material, but a google search should get you in the ball park. You need something with some heat tolerance and an anti reflective finish, dust free, etc.

A lot of these sorts of ideas were discussed prior to the epic MX flare solution.

I think it's also important to wait for official word from red on this since it is an electronic mount and there could be warranty issues and such that can only be addressed by RED.

i think your quick test does demonstrate that an improvement can be made but there probably has to be more thorough testing done.

Maybe be they will have some word on this soon and until then I'd hold off just to be sure.
