  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just throwing out a (probably obvious) question to everyone out there from a newbie.

+) Is there any motorised FIZ that directly snaps onto the lens itself rather than using 15mm rails?

Ie

--> No LWS rail

--> No Gearing cogs

--> Just two x half circles that that can snap around the lens (ie its teeth to drive the focus / Iris / zoom)

--> And a collar part that can attach to part of the lens that does not rotate (hopefully next to the teeth its trying to drive)

(Hmm... maybe I should find out more about how expensive lens work?)

--> Driving motor would be (very high torque) Piezo electric motor.

I am guessing that for Gimbal use - ie where only Focus is required, that this might be lighter than a LWS + existing follow focus motors?

Yes there are, but not universal.

Lenses are so different, it's pretty hard to design something that works with all that diffrent shape, gear location, gear stiffness (IE diameter or lenght of the motor to have enough torque).

You can have a look here too : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/24shots/silencer-follow-focus-system?ref=nav_search

I actually have designed this kind of very DIY follow focus snapping on the lens style (I'm actually not proud of the look but 6 years ago it was working and $30) :

Mini35 anyone ? :biggrinjester:

Thankyou for the heads up Guillaume.

It may be a dead end ... but I was contemplating a cross between:

(this is only two sections ... but conceivably more)

and

+) So that there is no cog (ie direct drive)

+) Where the active part of the motor pushes against the motor (eg 3 arcs that form part of the circle)
(Which should mean super high torque)

This might be a hair brained idea ... but intuitively, it just looks like there might be a lightweight generic solution in there somewhere.

Maybe it would suit DSLR lens where people's hands clamp against the barrel?
