  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fixed vs. Interchangeable lenses...

3D ready scarlet!!!! This is huge, though not many people seem to care for 3D here, I think it will be the future of cinema. This is another revolution for the scarlet a 3D 3K for 3K, sounds like a pattern.

The easiest way I can think of to project 3D on a low indie budget is to do color filtering for a red and blue, then blend the 2 images and watch with red-blue glasses.

Anyone know of other options available now? Any polarized monitors/projects available for cheap?

From my understanding Anaglyph (Red and Blue) leads to very poor results. The best way to project is with polarized filters and glasses or with synchronized LCD glasses.

Jim has stated they intend to make Red Ray drives with frame accurate sync. Two synced Red Rays could be connected to a digital projector or to two digital projectors, depending on the setup.

And remember many theatres are converting to Digital 3D within the next year, so available equipment is going to grow exponentially.

There are also several choices for 720p projectors under $1000 and 1080p around $2000. Higher resolution wouldn't be Indie Cheap for purchase.

DId everyone just miss this? he said RED would have tele and wide adapters for the SCARLET!

We did not - see post #75. But just to clarify - Jim said YES, but to a question of possibility. So they are thinking about it - it is not yet confirmed. However I do hope they will make it happen. If the adapters will have the same (or at least matched) optical quality as the lens, we are in for a treat and majority people will get away without a 35 DOF. Keep in mind good 35 DOF's costs as much as Scarlet.

Karapetkov & Tom:

I also like 35 DOF - and I have no doubt that they will emerge for Scarlet and there will be people doing some amazing stuff with them (hopefully me including - since I have $ 10K+ worth of Canon L-series glass). I was just mentioning that if RED indeed makes matched pair of wide & tele adapters for Scarlet it will satisfy many here who demands interchangeable lenses and those who could not afford good quality 35 DOF and the 35mm lenses...

Jim keeps mentioning that there are still some surprises in store when it comes to Scarlet. Frankly speaking - I can't imagine what else could they squeeze in (besides of build-in SSD  ) without compromising the size, price or weight...

Already what we know about Scarlet makes it the 8th Wonder of the World...

Good on You Jim & Co.!!!

Hello

I am completely satisfied by the specifications/price of this camera, and fully support the decision for fixed lens. Fixed lens is the right way to go, at least for the first generation product.

You can always launch interchangeable lens version four years from now if, say, 1000 people are willing to pay the deposit.
I suspect you'll only hear crickets, because people will be too busy generating content with their Scarlets to complain about this or that.

Building a product to satisfy 100% of the market is recipe for failure. It is preferable to have a product that satisfies 'only' 80% of consumers, but does its job 100% better than anything else out there.

My regards to all the staff at RED.

Red is going to sell thousands of Scarlets with fixed lens. The few complaining about it won’t even matter. If anybody wants or needs an interchangeable lens camera save 30 grand and buy the Red One.

People seem to not understand one thing about the Scarlet...
I think Jim actually said it also. Scarlet is also "a way" into the world and workflow of Red.

If you buy a Scarlet you have a simplified "half Red One". You still need the things to be working with it, like a laptop and Red Alert etc.
You need accessories that you also need for Red One. You might buy Red Drives, alot of CF cards, etc etc.

So, If you after a while feel that Scarlet isn't enough or can't give you what you want, it's not really that expensive to buy a Red One, because the accessories is already in your possession.

The expensive part is the lenses, but let's get real here... people ask for interchangable lenses on the Scarlet so I assume that those who ask for it already counted that cost in?

That then leaves you with just the Red One body at $17000. You use accessories from when you bought the Scarlet and you use the laptop and editing suite as you did with Scarlet.

If you start with Scarlet, you can earn the money to buy the necessary camera body of the Red One if that is what you want...
I for one will actually blow away any competition where I live and work, even with the Scarlet, so I will save up money in no time.
Get creative instead of complaining! I made a movie with a DVX100 and a Brevis35... some in the audience thought it was 35mm.
Just use the tools and don't think the camera will do YOUR work.

Maybe some people can't see further then a year from now?

I agree to what You said above. The people who wants the interchangeable lenses usually do so because they already have some 35mm still lenses and Red One supports 35mm still mounts - both Nikon and Canon. So even that cost is almost non existent - making Your point that much more valid...

That then leaves you with just the Red One body at $17000. You use accessories from when you bought the Scarlet and you use the laptop and editing suite as you did with Scarlet.

Keep in mind by the time Scarlet is out EPIC will be as well and there will be quiet a few Red Ones on the second hand market for around $10000 as lot of the "big" guys will go straight to EPIC for pristine 4K camera. They have also already paid their Red Ones several times over - so You should find some good deals...

Amen to that...

I doubt there will be many used Ones on the market, because Jim Jannard has said that One owners will be given $17,500 trade-in credits for their Ones when they buy Epics.

RED's have a $17.5K trade in value towards EPIC. So none of the upgraders will sell.

RED's will never sell for much less than $15K in my opinion. RED sellers will hook up with EPIC buyers that don't have a RED. Also, we may see an upgrade path for the RED ONE that effectively ends their life. Like, trade in your RED ONE and get the EPIC body style with a 4K chip for $5k. Then change the price of RED to $22K.

Apparently RED isn't as easily upgradeable and modular as they originally intended. It may be cheaper, easier, faster, better for RED to swap out RED one bodies than upgrade them one painful hand assembled update at a time.

Another thought.

An interchangeable lens Scarlet will kill the 35mm adapter companies.

They're cool and deserve mercy.

The [future] giant - RED - should be merciful to the humble ones.

:innocent:

But no mercy for the haughty Goliaths!

FREEDOOOOM ! :w00t:

It depends on what Red sells them for. Has Red said they would sell them for $10K? Seems to me people will not want to wait 9 months for a new RED ONE, so Red could sell them for about $15K and the buyer would be getting a Red ONE quicker, and a Red ONE that was used for a big Feature such as "The Argentine"

I don't see RED lowering pricing of RED ONE. There will be even a premium to get it upgraded to Mysterium-X. Already Red One is so "cheap" it begs questioning into its profitability...

I was referring to individual owners of RED ONE who had it for some time now and who will go and upgrade to EPIC as soon as it is out due to their "true" 4K requirements. They should be able to offer the second-hand Red One bodies for between $10K~$13K. Anything more then that and You better off with new body...

Jim,

I'm definitely one of the people ecstatic and anxious to purchase one myself. Yeah, I'm a soccer dad....or will be soon since my older kid is only 3 years old. But damn, I'm gonna have the best home videos out of all my photo/video crazy buddies.

I'm gonna have the best home videos out of all my photo/video crazy buddies

Why?

...and how will you store it? How will you ensure the images are preserved for next generations? How will you store it so your child will be able to watch it when he's a grown up?

I'm scared of digital photography as a way to document childhoods, memories, important occasions. My opinion is that the problem with digital storage is a problem that must be taken seriously.

If you really really want to store something then a physical frame is still much more reliable. Hard to apply to moving images though, but I would not for a second photograph my child with anything but traditional film.

Technology is moving on faster then people can reflect upon it's effect on ourselves as humans.

So, is the Scarlet for preserving memories and footage for later relatives or for bragging infront of your buddies?

I'm not hostile or anything, I'm just reflecting some thoughts that came to me while reading...

LOL! People really think they can carry a Red One around for fun shooting. Please inform yourself a little better. Red One is a heavy duty camera for heavy duty work. Wow!

What if RED keep the basic Scarlet fix-lensed, but allow an interchangeable mod for anyone who might be interested?

That means fixed Scarlet for the soccer moms and interchangeable Scarlet for soccer dads. :)

Hits the two markets and everyone is happy.

Probably it's not so simple, though.

Isn't that already done? I thought I read that there were going to be 4 versions of the scarlet from the fixed lens one up to the $12,000 brain version. I think that the 2/3 version with the mount at 2500 bucks sounds sweet.. Maybe 6-7K with everything wouldn't be a bad cinema-style camera and shooting 120fps is sweet. I guess that's why the other two don't have this as an option to differential it more so with the Epic.

I almost feel like this is a restaurant with too many things on the menu. Most of the other makers give you an option of chicken or chicken with sauce. Red is giving it to us a la carte and off the charts..

Is there anymore info on what media this will record too? I am sick and tired of the over-inflated prices of the media that the big cam companies are charging.. So in the meantime, I bought an HMC150... and will shoot it to death for a year and then see where things go from here..

personally I'm also going to hybernate and wait for this camera to emerge.. or the endless speculation and waiting will drive me nuts. I would like to put my email in a list and then have it pop up when the cams ready to purchase. I don't need more toy fever keeping me up at night and also in endless shopping fantasies..

cheers to you Jim and thanks for making this an interesting week .
