  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fixed vs. Interchangeable lenses...

And you can lock two together for 3D. Focal length, focus and aperture. Can't do that with two Nikons.

Jim

WOW!!!:w00t: or said another way... MOM!!!:usd:

In S35 cine, it is more like 18-144mm

Jim

While I was off on another thread fine tuning my desires to a 7-56mm that would look like a 17.5-140mm on an s35mm camera... you're over here writing this.

I'm trying hard not to... but the wise guy in me is... taking over... can't stop... must be smart ass...

How am I supposed to get the big wide vistas when I don't have that extra 0.5mm on the wide end? And who needs that extra 4mm out there on the telephoto end, that's just crazy!? This is not acceptable!

Can I have four?

Sounds good Jim. Scarlet should be a nice little toy for vacation/home video stuff and work well for location scouts and such.

Is that what you say about an F23? :-)

Jim if a Scarlet is able to outperform a F23 in DR, picture quality and color rendition I will personally show up to the red booth next year in a black speedo with a red logo just like my avatar's!

I would have to ask you to let Kelly know ahead of time that I am married and as tough as it would be for her she would have to restrain from touching me throughout the entire visit.

I see a new very popular crash camera in Hollywood's future...

I'll take 4 of em ... Jim any chance of some RED wide and tele adaptors just to give people the option of longer or wider glass ?

Thanks Jim

For me personally this is definitley the right decision.
I also think it's the right business decision.

If we can shoot a high speed 2K on 4K RED ONE camera sensor with such a great result
using a full 35mm lenses than Scarlet could be an ideal benefit 3K camera for use of 4/3" lenses.

I call it now

THE FOUR THIRDS (THIRD PARTIES) INTERCHANGEABLE LENS MOUNT SOLUTION FOR SCARLET

All it means that the third party makers of (a future) interchangeable lens mount for SCARLET

could maybe include interchangeable mount for all Four Third lenses, primes and zooms.

More about Four Thirds background:

"With the advancement of digital technology in recent years, there are image sensors used
on 35-mm film single-lens-reflex cameras. However, the optical design of the current interchangeable
lens for the 35-mm film camera is not perfect for the image sensor."

Two Third (2/3): approx. 8.80 x 6.60 mm (diagonal 11.00mm)

Four Thirds format: approx. 18 x 13.5mm (diagonal: 22.5mm)

RED ONE offers the Mysterium ™ Super 35mm cine sized sensor 24.4×13.7mm (diagonal approx. 27.98mm)

APS format: approx. 24 x16mm (diagonal: 28.8mm)

35mm format: 36 x24mm (diagonal: 43.3mm)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this case the relation between diagonal of 2/3 sensor size (11.00mm) to diagonal of 4/3 sensor size (22.5mm) is approx. x 2.045.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"In light of this situation, the Four Thirds Specification proposes an optimum image sensor size
and specifications of interchangeable lens suitable for camera in the digital age."

DSLR_Adv_FT_02.jpg

Film is tolerant with respect to light hitting it at an angle. Even at high resolutions film can collect
light falling at a high angle of incidence without a critical loss of brightness.

DSLR_Adv_FT_04.jpg

The following effects occur when light hits the sensor at high angles.
1) Reflection onto neighbouring pixels
2) Crosstalk between neighbouring pixels
3) Loss of brightness since some of the light cannot be captured by the sensor.
When combined, these problems lead to increased noise and poor results.

DSLR_Adv_FT_06.jpg

The near telecentric construction of lenses optimised for the Four Thirds Standard ensures light hits
the sensor at almost perpendicular angles. This guarantees edge to edge colour, clarity and higher brightness.

benefit_img01_01.jpg

Both photographs above were taken using the same angle of view and F-number, but one was taken
using a standard 35mm film camera lens and the other with a Four Thirds lens. A comparison of the images
clearly shows flaring and ghosting in the picture taken with the 35mm film camera lens, as well as coma flare
around the periphery and an overall lack of sharpness.
The picture taken with the Four Thirds lens, on the other hand,
does not have any apparent flares or ghosts and is uniformly sharp throughout the image plane.

FOUR THIRDS SENSOR SPECIFICATION

- The standard diagonal length is 21.63 mm (half that of 35-mm film format).

FOUR THIRDS MECHANICAL INTERFACE SPECIFICATION

- Mount: Bayonet mount (three pawls).
(70 degrees attachment angle with a stopper to prevent rotation)

- Lock mechanism: Lock groove on the lens-mount surface.
Movable lock pin on the body engages when mounting is complete.

- Electric contact: Fixed contact on the lens, movable contact on the body (9 contact points).

I could see that Erik Birger like guys are getting rich with his (future) FourThirds Scarlet's mount.

Damn if only Scarlet could come out right now :)
Jim anybody following this site will buy a Scarlet...I have little savings for existence after I moved from the US to India to make films:) Used up lot of my savings in the last 1.5 years in pursuit of getting somewhere here in the film world...still have little money left for scarlet and definitely buy it no matter what happens!

Finner is simply... The One !!

The scarlet reminds me why Arri developed the SR, but ti in a small case, store it under your plane seat, capture beautiful images. I will buy 2 of them.

Jim, I think you might be mistaken about this. You have recruited a band of followers here who want maximum flexibility when it comes to lenses. Just like you would never settle for a fixed lens on your 1Ds MarkII, Red worshipers expect the ability to match a lens with their project. This is why you see this "mild rebellion" here about fixed. Actually, it's just people responding to the atmosphere you have set up here -- the ability to give user feedback. None of us would ever shoot our serious DSLR stuff on a point-and-shoot digital camera. We want lens options. It's understandable.

Maybe one option would be to offer Scarlet with an interchangeable lens option for a couple grand more? My guess is that 70% or more of your orders would go for that, but I could be wrong.

You may need to wait for another camera, which is most likely already past the "idea" stage. We have discussed this over here:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=12235

Scarlet will be what was designed to be and Jim has now (once again) confirmed it won't have interchangeable lenses. I am on this with You - I am one of those who wants interchangeable lens mount (especially to re-use the battery of 35mm pro glass we already have) - but this won't happen with Scarlet...

Let us now start to write a screenplay for the movie titled

"Finner's RED DREAMS".

Awesome. Totally excited about this, even more so than the Red One.

Just some perspective for everyone, my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L lists for

$1190.00

It's heavy as hell. lol But it is sharp wide open, an awesome lens.

A whole 3K camera for $3000.00 is absolutely incredible deal.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L

I've never found the money to invest in that lens even though it's a pretty damn good lens. To have 18 - 144m at 2.8 together with a camera that can film stuff up to 120fps... it's kinda like I got Santa in my x-mas present giving me the ability to get presents all year.

Forgot to thank Jim for this present though... thanks Jim!!
