  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fixed Scarlet Wide Angle abilities

I was also a little worried about how wide the Scarlet would go, but having just caught glimpses of the Scarlet's monitor during interviews, and having used with a 5D MKII with a 28mm lens attached (approximately the same FOV as Scarlet at it's widest), it's pretty safe to say that Scarlet should be wide enough for most normal applications.

Like most people have said, any wider would actually be unusually wide. If I'm concerned about anything, it's Scarlet's performance in low light. I've had too much of a good time with the 5D MKII FF sensor to step down to a 2/3 sensor.

EDIT: A few quick searches on youtube and vimeo should give you a good idea of what to expect:

BTW, this is all based on the assumption that Scarlet's widest FOV is still equivalent to 28mm on a FF sensor

given the footage of the interview with Ted at the CES, the lowlight capabilities of Scarlet are incredible good to say the least.

actually this 10-24mm in your camera gets a 1.6 crop which makes it 16-38mm...so the scarlet is not far away from it...

Hmmm. Scarlet has 35mm full-frame (stills definition) equivalent field of view of 28mm at the wide end. 10-24mm has 16mm equivalent FOV on Canon APS-C. 16 vs. 28 is not close AT ALL.

A 0.65 adapter will convert 28mm to about 18mm. So, ok with an adapter it's not far away from 16mm. But even then, 16 and 18 are quite different. And maybe someone will make a fisheye adapter.

As far as Scarlet Fixed's lens being fine for most work - I can't argue. It will be fine at the wide end for what I do, though I'll need a tele adapter. But that's not the OP's point. He wants wide-ultrawide capability. He can have it with adapters. The question then may become whether Scarlet Interchangeable/Cinema would be a better choice. Good adapters will be big and expensive (relative to the Fixed's small size and bargain price). The widest announced RED mini prime is 6mm (but T1.5!), about 22mm 35mm equivalent. Others on this forum are more expert on 16mm glass. There are a lot of options. Try a search - it's been discussed before.

This should cover most uses, for most people. My widest lens right now on Epic is 16mm, and it's fine for most occasions.

If you really want to see how a master uses wide lenses, plan to see Terrence Malick's film TREE OF LIFE May 27th. It is my understanding that not a single shot in the entire film has a longer focal length than 24mm!! Take a look at the trailer. All of the shots are ultra wide.

Shooting extremely wide has also become something of an obsession for me, despite my lack of super-wide PL lenses. :(

How good is Malick at using the actors' narration to had another level of goodness. In this and Thin Red Line
