The November 30 announcement

"6. Two independent microphone levels chanels, balanced imput curcuits, 48V Phantom Power, digitized at 24-bit 48 KHz."

If I understand this correctly, I can plug in a microphone like the Rode NTG-3 (using this kit http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/563847-REG/Rode_NTG_3_NTG_3_Ultimate_Shotgun_Microphone.html ) directly into the Fixed Scarlet to record audio to start. That later I could get either a base or pro i/o module and get a mixer or field recorder. But for now I could start with one or two mics pluged directly into the Fixed. Does the "48V Phantom power" mean the the Fixed Scarlet would also power the mic?"

Thanks Tiana

Yes, fully capable of supporting pro mics with an xlr to 3.5mm TRS adapter cable.

So I understand this correctly? 2 mic inputs with +48VDC using 1/8 TRS jacks?
I wouldn't call this fixed. This is worse than the TA3 jacks.

Once you see the Scarlet brains in person you will understand why they come with 1/8 ports. They are just too small for anything else. If you want full size XLR ports just buy the Pro I/O module and you are good to go.

Thanks, For the replies.

I think I'm going to get a mic or two now and worry about the rest out the audio stuff later.

I've ordered some lights. I just want to start getting ready for when the Fixed Scarlet ships. I have a Macbook pro so I'll wait until the last min to update my computer and editing software.

Thanks Tiana

I think that by "Fixed Scarlet" the original post refers to the model with the built-in lens.

Although there's absolutely nothing wrong with an audio adaptor which runs 1/8" into XLR, there are serious mechanical issues with a female 1/8" audio connector which I have doubts about in terms of Scarlet reliability.

The 1/8" connector presents one of the smallest total "connection areas" of any audio connector available.
Even the lowly RCA has more actual area making the connection, and a much more robust method of making the mechanical connection.

It's not only a degraded (already miniscule) connection area to worry about, it's also the number of users who will actually clean the camera (female) connectors often enough to not suffer degraded audio.

24/48 is fine if all mechanical connections are 100%, but I anticipate this will be one area of the items that sees frequent need for replacement, expecially if heavily used.

Frankly, the 1/8" format is a 100% consumer grade connection, and a barely acceptable one at that. (The concept of 48V phantom running on this connector is something no audio professional would ever endorse).

I sincerely hope RED rethinks the 1/8" audio-in connector. It's not something one would normally spec for a professional or semi-professional film making tool.
There are many more far more robust connection schemes out there, many of which take up little or no more room that a 1/8" female jack, and all of which could be easily adapted to XLR and 48V phantom power.

The point is never that professionals will tend to use double-system sound.......but rather that having sub-standard audio inputs on the camera reduces the options available in the field if going single-system for reasons that only become apparent at the time of filming.

I understand what you mean about consumer connectors...everyone remembers how cables kept coming out of the firewire port on the HVX200.

However, I don't really think the audio ports on the DSMC brains are meant for professionals. They weren't in the original spec sheet for the Scarlet and Epic and were added on at no extra cost. I think they are more meant for scratch audio and people who simply can't afford the $1,750 Base I/O module or sound guy. If professional audio is important for your projects then the Base I/O or Pro I/O modules are an absolute must.

If RED starts putting high quality ports on the brains then the price and size will likely go up and we start losing the benefits of the module system.

Point taken Justin.

The pre-amp, A/D convertor, etc are already in the brain, this is really only a change of the actual connector itself.
Connectors at the OEM level are under $5.00, so we're talking a very small amount of cash.

I don't know if I'd call 24/48 "scratch" audio, and it truly seems the intent is to offer decent quality audio for single system without the Base I/O.

Amphenol/Tuchel offers some amazing new hybrid connectors (some of which look like they've already found their way onto some RED products), and it's these type of connectors I'd like to see on the Scarlet.

I'd gladly pay the extra $10.00, even though I do 95% double-system sound.

3.5mm TRS is not a standard connection for a +48VDC microphone. If fact, the owners will find out why phantom power is not put on TRS connectors.

Please do explain your comments. How so?
