I am planning on getting Scarlet Fixed 8x Fixed Zoom as soon as its available but I had a few questions I havent been able to find on the site. One of the main things i would be shooting is surfing which is going to be at distances of 100+ yards. Would I need to make any modifications to this setup to get quality footage?
Also does anyone have any recommendations on the best way for an individual to insure his equipment while traveling the world and shooting?
thanks!

i don't know how helpful this advice is going to be, but if you will be shooting from really long distances you might want to consider getting one of the interchangable bodies for the scarlet because an 8x zoom might not do it for you, but its hard to say without having the camera in your hands. as for insurance, most insurance companies offer insurance that covers theft and accidental damage. at least i believe this to be the case. Just check with you insurance company and you could probably get a nice bundle with homeowners and car insurance.

thanks David, any idea what a policy like this would cost for the fixed lens scarlet if it is indeed around the $3500 price point?thanks!

I'm a big fan of the Scarlet fixed, but this actually sounds to me like a situation where the 2/3 Cinema with SLR lenses would make sense.

go to https://www.buymyinsurancenow.com
enter your insurance amounts $$ and they will give you a price (within seconds)
note that the min policy is $425 year ...

IMO based on what i know about Scarlet the 8X zoom is not going to do it for shooting surfers 100yards away ...

That seems like the most cost effective solution. But, as far as we know, you lose AF in that setup... Until we get a mini-Birger (if that would make any sense on the business side of things).

Maybe there will be a selection of tele extenders for fixed Scarlet that would work for you.

I was looking into doing this and found out that the sensor on the 3K fixed is a lot physically smaller than shooting 3k windowed on a RED ONE.

The resolve power of your 35mm still lens will be diminished, the windowed portion would be very, very small but on the plus side a normal lens will act as a zoom.

I'm pretty sure there will be tele and wide adapters available. I think it's been mentioned, anyway. If the lens was approximately an 8-64, a doubler would take it to 128mm, which on a 2/3 sensor would be pretty good at 100m. Ideally I'd like a 10-80mm with a doubler to 160mm, and a .6x wide adapter, with maybe a .4x superwide/fish. That would cover my selfish needs. Who knows though, maybe the Scarlet will end up having a 10x lens, since the specs always are changing.

Peter Majtan said that his company (or someone he is working for) is developing wide and tele adapters :D :sifone:

excellent! any idea on ballpark price for a tele extender ?

I'm pretty sure I remember Jim or Jarred mentioning that RED will also make high quality tele and wide adapters for the fixed 8x. But choice is always good eh ;)
I'd hope that the wide angle/tele converters won't cost more than ~500$ each. I would at least feel silly if I had to buy a wide angle that cost 1/3 of the camera price :D

Yes, I remember that comment, too. No mention of price, but since it would be designed with the Scarlet in mind, I'm sure the pricing would be in line with what the camera itself goes for.
