I mentioned this in another thread, but thought it warranted it's own discussion. It is my belief that many were hoping for interchangeable lenses in order to achieve the 35mm DoF look without having to use an image softening/desaturating 35mm adapter.

With that said, is it possible to keep the fixed lens with all it's wonderful auto features so RED can sale a ton of these to consumers, but increase the size of the sensor to get 35mm DoF, or at least closer to it?

I'm sure RED is considering it, but I wanted to point out that along with all the other neat features of Scarlet, short DoF is one of the most important tools one can have for beautifully artistic and visually interesting storytelling.

Regardless what Scarlet will be, I'll own at least one, if not more. And yes, I will buy a RED ONE soon, so please no, "Buy a RED ONE if you want that" suggestions.

Discuss and spread the love.

As always, thanks for everything RED team!

Seeing what the Red company has accomplished, I'm sure they'll make Scarlet's fixed lens kick ass with enough DOF without us having to use those shi**y 35mm adapters. Whatever Red decides to do in the end, it will be great.

My wallet is open, patiently waiting to make a down payment... :)

I think people are blowing this way out of proportion. You can get shallow Depth of Field with a 2/3" sensor... it all depends on the lens.

Besides that. Depth of field is not the deciding factor in image quality. In fact I think people put way too much faith in it. I find when people get 35mm adapters or are so hyper-school-boy amped on using shallow DOF it loses all real purpose. It should only be used when you picture the shot, and for the STORY, it wouldnt make sense if it didnt have an EXTREMELY shallow depth of field.

Maybe RED will cave and make it a 35mm sized area... but i doubt it. And i kind of hope they dont... because myself, i prefer to have things in focus not out of focus. Especially considering this is a handheld camera.... doesnt really lend itself to having shallow depth of field.

When i think of shallow depth of field i think of grade ten photography class...

We're here to make stories.

good points nathan, but, as you know depth of field is another "tool" for directing attention to something or can be used artistically. Having this tool in the arsenal is a bonus, doing it in camera without any adapters is a huge bonus too. It also saves a couple of grand of buying the adapter and a lens.
2/3 chips should help a great deal in accomplishing this with of course high T stops and distance to subject. Definetely a great feature

You mean low T-stops don't you. You want shallow DoF right? Then you need to be as open as you can on your lens.

and yes I think that most of you will be very happy with the DoF you'll get from Scarlet with the sensor and it's "fixed lens". You've all been watching a lot of music videos, commercials and feature films that have been shot on S16 and thought that it looks great.

It is not worth discussing as it is not worth the cost. If they are going to do anything balanced audio would be better but even that I can live without.

DOF can be done in post to a certain extend. (It can be faked)

I think people need to come down to reality of what Scarlet is already going to do. 3k resolution with 120fps shooting.

Instead of worrying about the limitations of the camera take those limitations and incorporate them into your story.

It is the limitations that can make an indie film so good.

This camera is going to be a million times better than any cam with adapter that you've shoot with. I don't think you guys need to worry.

(and yes you can create DoF in post, but you can't fake it. It will always be visible that it wasn't a camera DoF)
