I was wondering whether the complete kit's price, that the Scarlet fixed lens has, is a special deal?

I mean, can I get the regular 2/3 scarlet with the same configuration and a single (or even more) lens for around the same price? (currently 3,750 but knowing Red it could change)

I suppose it would be a lot easier if Red announces the prices of the different accessories but I don't know when will that happen.

I'd really appreciate even a vague answer, whether it's supposed to be higher, lower or about the same price.

Thanks,
Nadav

I doubt you'll be able to get a lens for $500 that you'll want to shoot with. The Fixed is going to be the most economical route, even if they offer the same add-on price, I doubt you're going to find a lens option as nice as they say the Fixed lens will be.

Glass ain't cheap, but you get what you pay for. That being said from an economical standpoint, the fixed lens model is the way to go.

I don't know if this has been discussed in another thread....
I work with documentaries and I would like to see lenses developed with AF because in certain situations, it is invaluable to forget about focus pulling.
I know the 8x fixed lens for Scarlet has AF, but I prefer to build a modular systems with the 2/3 rd brain.

Can anyone tell me which RED lenses are expected to have AF?

All of RED's 2/3 primes announced so far will have only manual focus. Same with their S35 sized lenses. It looks like the FF35 lenses are the only interchangeable ones so far that feature auto-focus support.

Maybe I don't understand the "Complete Kit" Scarlet 2/3rd. It seems it is ready to shoot out of the box, and in my conservative mind, it's just another camera, that's my mistaken assumption. Would the accesories of a Full Kit Scarlet be the same ones you would get for building an FF35? I just don't know if the aim of a Complete Kit is to cover the spectre of soccer mums, meaning, its accesories don't belong to the array of the accesories meant for the rest of the line of Scarlet brains.

Hey guys, if you spend some time on Red.com... you can see its a fully modular system... I would also search Jannard posts... as he gives
all kinds of answers... but you need to take the time to read.

for instance... he has hinted that the FIxed will have a killer new
"fly by wire" FF ... and was preferenced by the words...

wait until you see ... :)
as for it being just another camera

uh its a single chip 2/3 sensor that shoots 3K for under $4K... what other
camera offers that?

Who knows, maybe it will shoot "just under 4K" for "just under $4k". Red reserves the right to change anything at anytime.

Considering Red has been posting footage and stills recorded by the 2/3-inch Mysterium-x -- which probably means it's getting near to production -- I doubt that the sensor's pixel count specs will change, especially upward (it has decreased somewhat since Scarlet was first announced a little less than a year ago). Of course "under 4K for under $4K" would work.

To my mind, the EX3 is the only other camera you might consider in this price range and it doesn't even come close. From what I've seen of the Canon 5D another option, its not really a moving picture camera or at best prosumer. If you cant afford a brain and some lenses in the 2/3, get the fixed, it will rock. Kind of like the old 8mm cameras we used in film school, but at 3K. Hello?

I would like to know how other people feel about automatic features. After graduated from film school 8 years ago, I would look down upon anything Automatic. Having worked a lot by now in the documentary industry, I now see the point of having automatic features in certain situations where full control of the camera is next to impossible...
This is where I would like some feedback, especially from the Red Team...I know the Fixed Lens Scarlet will have this option but I would like to be able to use primes and it seems the only other way to have automatic features is in the FF35 line up of lenses. I need the Red "look" but can't risk the shallow depth of field of FF35, specially when working with a very reduced crew and budget. That's why I'm going for the 2/3 rd Scarlet but wishing I could be able to change lenses with automatic features....

Thanks and sorry if it sounds terribly complicated, I guess we all are.

I believe it'll be closer to the equivalent of 16mm film, not 8mm.

You want something that makes your life easier (automatic modes) but also wants something that complicates your life (exchanging lenses)?

So, let's say, you want 3 different primes with auto-focus?

Why do you want primes exactly because of the extra speed? Shallower DOF?

Have you checked this page before? www.red.com/epic_scarlet

I think you can use the FF35 Monstro Scarlet with RED electronic lenses...
But I think both won't be available as soon as the 2/3".

As I said, sometimes you need these features, i.e., automatic focus, automatic exposure, 10% of the time, and it pays to have it. Other times, like during interviews, you want the best optics available, yes, because of its shallow focus, bokeh, etc... I thought that the concept of the DSMC was to be able to have the advantage of both worlds. Of course changing lenses complicates my life, that's why I wouldn't change them in complicated situations. In complicated situations, yes, I would love to pop in a prime lens that would enable me to use the automatic features most still photographers take for granted in such situations, and preserve the quality of a prime.

Is everybody on this forum going to have a professional focus puller standing by on every job?

I wish I could.

As with all things Epic/Scarlet, we'll really just have to wait until it comes out to make any final judgments. From what we're hearing about the new Red Pro Glass (Red Primes) the image quality is fantastic, and to quote another member "S4 killers." Until the fixed Scarlet comes out, we won't know exactly what the quality of the lens is like - I'm sure we won't be disappointed - but you may find that it is enough for your needs (ie: good bokeh, etc) - and f2.4 is plenty fast enough for me.

I believe the interchangeable 2/3 Scarlet is being marketed as "2/3 Cinema" - I wouldn't expect to find auto anything on it as much as we would expect it on any other professional cinema camera.
