  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fixed Lens Focal Lengths?

Not as of yet. That is something that will be revealed within the coming weeks.

For a while now they've said it will be an 8x zoom... So not the best for Wildlife... unless you want to get closer than normal.

I've asked both Jim and Jarred at the REDuser Event,

Jarred: "We have the lengths, but we aren't publishing them yet"

Jim: "I don't know offhand"

 If only he had known

I wouldn't expect 8x to be great for wildlife, unless they were really shorting the wide end. Well, I seem to remember mention of kits for the interchangeable as well, hopefully, there's something there that would get me wildlife focal lengths without breaking the bank.

All things are subject to change, but when Scarlet was first announced Red stated they planned to make a 2x extender and a wide converter for the fixed lens Scarlet. Since then the only thing said by Red about that is that those things are on hold for the time being. I believe Red will indeed follow through with making the 2X extender and wide converter. I also think they will be excellent optically, and designed to match the 8x lens perfectly.

A quick bayonet or screw-on capability 2x and wide converter (full zoom through) will seriously enhance production in mobile genres such as documentaries, sports, music, lifestyle, reality, travel, corporate, etc - and definitely wildlife and nature.

Being small, mobile, and with the capability to shoot long shots at 16x with the 2x attached, 8x for normal shooting, and with the wide converter for panoramic shots and tight spaces, will truly unlock the broad utility of the fixed lens Scarlet.

If Red doesn't make the 2x and wide converter, other companies will quickly make them - but IMO if Red makes them, they will be much more closely matched in optics to Scarlet's 8x.

I think that nearly everyone who buys a fixed lens Scarlet will also buy a 2x and wide converter if they're available - and that's a ton of additional product sales volume to think about. Just about everyone I know who shoots with a small form factor fixed lens camera has a 2x and wide converter in their camera kit - including me when I shoot with that type of camera.

IMO it would be a serious mistake by Red not to follow through and make a 2x and a wide converter for the fixed lens Scarlet!

I would expect a wide zoom lens as that would be most practical.

For wildlife, an Interchangeable seems like a must. You would need very long lenses at your disposal, which 8x just won't allow. I am sure there will be bundles with the Interchangeable to make it attractive.

Please let it be a wide zoom. I make a lot of indoor shoots and it would be practical for me. Plus there are a lot of shots that I would like to make with the scarlet that would need to be wide.

and a wide converter would make it even sweeter :)
