Shot with the Birger mount on Zeiss still glass (mostly). Build 14. Thanks to Aquavideo Red for the rental while I waited for my #1525.

The shoot was a blast. 23 days of principal photography, great cast and crew. Now we're shooting action scenes at nights and weekends. We hope to color-correct the 1k version and post it and a trailer soon.

Thanks!
Keith

the one we used most was a 50mm still zeiss. i cant stress enough how much we love that lens. its very similar to a zeiss standard in quality, yet since its a still lens, its way less expensive. i felt like we were pulling a trick on "the system."

and the birger mount was a prototype but worked fantastic. i went with the nikon mount for my own camera, to save a few bucks. i hope i dont live to regret it.

THing is the Still mounts are not 1/2 the robust quality of PL...I was so stoked about the Nikon mount...now I feel like I would only use it for super low budget stuff with lenses I did not care about that I could trash if needed...:)

uh oh. that sounds scary. define "robust quality."

i have a friend in town with some zeiss ultraprimes and we're going to do comparison tests. what i've shot with nikons have been "ok" but nowhere near the quality of the zeiss still glass. hmmm maybe i'll pony up the rental dough for the zeiss.

mmm...

Keith, do you mean nikons are no good?
Could you post some footage or pics?
By the way, ultraprimes/still zeiss comparison test would be cool.

LENS TEST: Zeiss Super Speed (MK3) VS Zeiss ZF SLR's (Shot on RED) has been done once by Ryan E. Walters :

Rami, that was Obin talking, not me. I'm going to do tests on the 19th in the same situation, maybe even the same location. Bright Florida sun, the nikons vs ultraprimes. I also hope to have the Zeiss still 50mm lens too. Shooting a real scene, two separate cameras, all handheld, lots of action.

Here is straight from the horses mouth (my friend who owns the ultraprimes):

"I dont know if you will see a difference but as far as on set functionality it will be better, it would be interesting to see though!"

Dont know if I'll see the difference!?! If that's the case, I'll take Nikon! :) That may shoot holes in Obin's theory...

Keith,

Can't wait to see your lens test footage.
And i watched again the fight scene... It looks amazing to me.
You and your team did a great job. And as i can see by the Facebook pics it must have been fun too.

Bravo

I hear ya Matt.

But I dont understand "robust quality" comment. If I can pay $300 for a zeiss still lens and the mount is rock solid too and they get roughly the same look as ultraprimes via PL--so much so that the owner of the ultraprimes thinks i wont notice a difference!--i dont mind having a teeny lens on the front of my camera. Maybe I'm missing something. Is it a speed issue of taking lenses off and on? After shooting a whole feature on the Birger, I dont think it was a slow process. It cant be a focus thing--having a big knob to turn for easy focus--that's what they make follow focus for. (And we shot that without follow focus!)

I'll reserve judgment til I try the PL workflow. Counting the days.

And thanks, Rami. Our fight coordinator worked on Batman Begins, Casino Royale, Gladiator, and 23 other big films... He choreographed the scene I posted. I know a normal human being couldn't take that much punishment, but, what the heck, its the movies. :) We shot the whole movie handheld. And only 3 chiropractor visits for my DP!

I'm waiting to get more fight scenes shot before we post the trailer. Our 30 second teaser needs a lot of work as is, but we've got some great money shots I can't wait to share. We had so much fun editing scenes on the fly. We didnt watch dailies, we watched rough cuts while shooting. lol

I'll post some random takes soon. We cut together a little something and showed it at principal photography's wrap party.

Our fight coordinator worked on Batman Begins, Casino Royale,

I've been trying to set up a fight for a test and I checked your link out and thought "damn, that's a pretty good fight. Keith is really getting this thing figured out!" I feel a little less inadequate knowing you had a pro fight coordinator out there. But I definitely noticed you had some good cut points and blocking. Nice work.

Looking forward to seeing more and hearing your thoughts about PL vs. SLR though I'm pretty commited to SLR style at this point.

joelnet etc, are you shooting build 16? we are shooting 15 2.2.1 because we know we can rollback to 14 where we can punch in while recording to set focus. We learned the hard way we cant do that with build 15. We're shooting alot of run-and-gun with minimal time to set marks and love build 14's usability. I hope they go back to that before the official release of 16! We shouldn't be penalized because other people are stupid and forget they're punched in! Heres the question: is the added dynamic range in build 16 worth it? Because a film out of focus aint a film... sigh.

I havent got a confirmation from my guy on the zeiss ultraprimes! gah! sorry guys. anyone in the orlando area got better lenses than our nikons and want to do some tests during a real feature shoot, we'd love to have you as a third camera... send me a PM. We're also doing lighting tests on thurs night before sat and sun, they start at 9pm.
