Welp, I'm just SOL

The home insurance adjuster reports "professional machinery" is not covered...

Unfortunately, as I had just gotten the Scarlet-X a month ago, I had yet to settle on which liability/loss insurance to get for production use and had kept the RED camera and other gear at home thinking I was covered there...

I'm going to have to save up for a quite a while to buy replacements, not only for a red camera, buy for at least some basic production accessories.

Seriously,

It seems as if a good deal of these are getting swiped, not cool at all.
I'm wondering how these chumps keep nabbing REDS?????

Word of mouth, personal websites, gear rental classifieds, camera forums like REDUSER/DVXUSER, take your pick. It really wouldn't be difficult at all for someone to pick and choose a target with the information available on the Internet.

Hi Again All,

(final update and recap)

I lost almost everything in a home burglary on Monday May 14th while on a RED shoot w/ Ryan Emanuel in SF. The thieves got not only Scarlet-X #2350, but anything of value in the home. Home owner's insurance is screwing my finance and I, and I had yet to get a specific policy on the RED stuff as I had just gotten the Cam(4/11), wanted a comprehensive policy, and hadn't decided yet (was still reading through all details).

I'm not well to do financially, I'm looking into getting a 2nd job to try and help recover from the loss. I have alerted my red rep, and the scarlet is reportedly marked in the RED system as stolen.

I did manage to shoot a quick short, Dream Catcher, which I will post in the shot on RED section once I recover enough emotionally to continue and finish editing.

I posted some RCX graded frames from the short in the forum:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?78021-Thank-You-Jim!

I believe in RED and the potential Jim, Jarred, the RED team, and the reduser community has given to filmmakers. The thieves may have stolen my tools, but no one will ever steal my vision. I hope to purchase another RED camera in the future.

Thanks All, See You in the Future,

Dan

very sorry to hear this news Daniel. this truly saddens me and makes me think?

what if someone brought this stolen camera and didnt know it was stolen. and when it came time to upgrade red says...... "hey this camera was flag a stolen and returned to owner" would the buyer be SOL . i dont mean to make light of your situation. ive been in the same boat i had my 5d stolen in 2009 just days after i got it. i ask because this honestly concerns me because im in the market for a use scarlet.

perhaps someone for the redteam can answer this question.

I'd lawyer up and see if you can fight your insurance. You should be able to get a free consultation and if the lawyer thinks he can make them pay he'll take the case.

That's exactly what I'm doing now, meeting w/ a paralegal and determining the best lawyer option.

The home insurance guy is claiming anything "professional" is only covered up to $2500; however, the policy states(paraphrasing) anything that has been previously used professionally is then limited to a maximum of $2500. The scarlet had not been used for pay, frankly more to do with the simple fact that I had just gotten it, was too busy learning how to best use it, and because I had yet to settle on a liability/loss policy.

BTW, in SF w/ 1 mil of liability coverage, and with at least 60 days advanced notice, you can shut down a street(500), get a day shoot permit(75), and hire an on-duty SF Cop(80-120/hr)... all for about 1K!

I'm pretty sure all used red sales go through RED, as in the camera is physically sent to RED for inspection, and the cost to transfer ownership is roughly $750 if memory serves me correctly. I'm also pretty sure if you buy a used scarlet and don't have ownership transferred to you, RED wouldn't upgrade or do anything for the camera.

Of potential interest, the Flickr account that was used to host the wanted picture of the suspect was deleted recently by a third party request...

...see attachment for current wanted poster for information leading to the arrest and conviction of John Michael Berndt

Poster will also go online shortly at: http://www.johnmichaelberndt.com

Awesome Daniel~ I live in Oakland too, and am a Scarlet owner. I'll keep my eyes peeled. Hope they find him as well. Best regards

First post on here. Hi everyone. Very sorry to hear about these thefts. It's the stuff of nightmares.

From experience I am inclined to rely on police only for occasional roadside assistance. In burglary situations at best they are there after the crime, at worst they are the actual criminals.

The right kind of dogs are a good idea if you are a dog person. Wireless surveillance with cloud storage and battery backup is not prohibitively expensive these days either. However, the base level protection you can make for your kit is a re-bar cage with a very solid lock on it, bolted to the floor and concealed behind a false wall somewhere. Sure you can cut through the rebar with the right tools but it will either take hours or make a heck of a racket and still take too long to be logistically viable to any discerning opportunist. It's easy to make this kind of setup and it's cheaper and way more secure than any safe you can buy.

Personally I have seven big dogs that really don't like strangers and a lot of other security measures. There's a lot of desperation out there these days.

I sincerely hope some you get some kind of resolution to the massive loss here.

For anyone stilling following this thread:

Good News, I ordered a new RED camera this week as a replacement.
I received an insurance settlement and a partial advance on an up-coming project.
Sales Number: SO-0075263

Bad News, The Oakland Police force has ONE person to investigate all accounts of theft in Oakland (he's a lieutenant on the force - he's busy enough already). Long story short, they don't have the man power to do anything other then file their report. Myself, or a third party, would have to physically hand the thief to the police to get anywhere.

Other Good News, I managed to do a citizen's arrest on a thug in a separate case who was attempting to mug passengers w/ his "crew" on the subway system in Oakland (BART). His three accomplices got busted for illegally using emergency exits in their attempt to escape/evade the police. In a way, I feel good knowing I did succeed in catching one criminal, and assisting in the arrest of three others.
Four thugs off the streets - I call that a win.

Vigilante! I love it. I actually just stopped a burglar from breaking into my neighbors apartment by holding him at gun point until the police arrived. I didn't realize until after I had grabbed the plugged barrel prop gun instead of the real thing. Could have been bad for me haha.

I still hold hope that the thief who stole your camera will be brought to justice. Seems like the Police aren't a very viable solution in this case.

!!! UPDATE !!!

I received a called today from a police detective that reports they may have located my camera in Oakland. Apparently they were tipped off, and he's going to the location later today to verify and may need me to identify the camera and potentially the suspect.

That is fantastic. Best of luck. Go police!!!

Wow cool! Go get em! :) Best of luck. I hope it's yours!

If it is... will you end up with two cameras in your hands? ;)

Great News! Hope you get your stuff back and the thief gets what he deserves. Good luck!

I'm curious as well, does that mean you will get to keep the 2nd camera and have 2 now?
